Shockers Fall to Iowa State, 3-1

OMAHA, Neb. – Iowa State hit .299 on the way to a 3-1 win over Wichita State at the Bluejay Invitational. The Cyclones won by scores of 25-17, 25-19, 22-25 and 25-20.
 
Megan Taflinger led the Shockers with 16 kills and hit .333, while Emma Wright added 10 kills. Kali Eaken had 24 assists and Giorgia Civita added 22 digs.
 
SET 1:
• Iowa State pulled away for a 25-17 win in the first set
• The Cyclones took a quick 5-1 lead, but a kill from Regan Stiawalt and a service ace from Kali Eaken tied the score at nine
• The two teams traded points and a Megan Taflinger kill made it 14-14
• ISU then went on an 8-0 run to go in front 22-14
• The Cyclones won the set 25-17 after taking three of the last four points
• Taflinger led the Shockers with four kills on six swings and hit .667
 
SET 2:
• The Cyclones took a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 win in the second set
• A Taflinger kill and block by Alex Koon and Abby Pugh gave the Shockers an 8-6 lead
• Kills from Koon and Tabitha Brown made the score 10-8, but the Cyclones answered with a 5-0 run to go in front 13-10
• A service ace gave ISU a 19-13 lead and the Cyclones closed out the set 25-19
 
SET 3:
• The Shockers stayed alive with a 25-22 win in the third set
• A Wright kill gave the Shockers an early 4-2 lead, but ISU answered with a 5-0 run to go in front 7-4
• Back to back Shocker hitting errors gave the Cyclones a 14-8 lead, but the Shockers answered with a 5-0 run to pull within 14-13
• A Taflinger kill tied the set at 15 and Koon's service ace and Wright's kill put WSU up 17-15
• Kills from Taflinger and Stiawalt pushed the lead to 19-16, but the Cyclones came back to tie it at 22
• The Shockers scored the final three points with kills from Chase Jackson, Grace Burken and Taflinger to win 25-22
 
SET 4:
• The Cyclones won the match with a 25-20 win in the fourth set
• ISU raced out to a 7-3 lead and three Shocker errors pushed the lead to 10-5
• Two Stiawalt kills pulled WSU to within 15-13, but the Cyclones went on a 3-0 run to take an 18-14 lead
• WSU got within two, but ISU won the set 25-20
 
The Shockers are next in action on Sun., Sept. 9 at No. 14 Creighton at 2 p.m.
