Alex Koon hit .500 and
Emma Wright collected a career-high three services aces to help the Wichita State volleyball team post its first sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory over the North Texas Mean Green Friday evening, Sept. 14, in the North Texas Challenge at the North Texas Volleyball Center. The Shockers won by set scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-19.
Wichita State (5-5) is slated to conclude play in the challenge Saturday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m. against 14th-ranked Cal Poly.
Tabitha Brown tallied a match-high 13 kills, while Koon also reached double-figure kills with 10, and
Kali Eaken dished out 22 assists, leading the Shockers offensively.
Giorgia Civita added a match-best 16 digs, and Wright and
Regan Stiawalt teamed up for three blocks each to pace the WSU defensive effort.
The Shockers utilized a 4-0 run late in the first set to turn a 21-18 deficit into a 22-21 lead after a Wright kill. WSU would not give up its advantage the rest of the set, earning a 25-23 victory to take a 1-0 lead.
In set two, Wichita State scored five consecutive points to balloon a 10-9 lead into a 15-9 advantage after a Mean Green (4-9) attacking error. WSU would go one to score five of the final seven points in the set to claim the 25-15 victory and build its advantage in the match to 2-0. For the set, the Shockers hit a blistering .409, committing only two errors on 22 attempts.
Wichita State raced out to a 5-2 lead in the third set after a North Texas attacking error and never looked back on its way to a 25-19 triumph to clinch the match. The Shockers led by as much as six points in the set and compiled an impressive .303 hitting percentage.
For the match, Wichita State outhit North Texas, .264 to .191, and compiled eight service aces and six blocks to go along with 37 digs.
Rhett Robinson and Valerie Valerian each had nine kills, while Karley York added seven digs, leading the Mean Green.
