TAMPA, Fla. - The Wichita State softball team fell 3-1 in the final conference series of the year to eventual regular season champions USF in a rain-delayed final matchup.
Mackenzie Wright led off the game with a single into left center, the third straight game she's reached base in her first at-bat. With two outs she stole second, the 52nd of her career, before
Bailey Lange crushed a standup triple to right field to bring her home and giving Wichita State an early 1-0 lead.
USF tied it up in the bottom of the second with a double, single and walk loading the bases. A sacrifice fly got a runner home to tie the game at 1-1 with the Bulls taking the lead in the third following two straight singles and a fielder's choice.
Both teams left a runner on base in the fourth with both going down in order in the fifth.
Lange had a one-out single into left field in the sixth but the Shockers left her there. The Bulls led off with a base hit into center field in the bottom half and scored on an error on a routine groundout to push the lead to 3-1.
The Shocker bats went down in order in the seventh with the win confirming USF as the regular season conference champions and Wichita State dropping into a tie for third.
WSU moves to 30-20 on the year and finishes with a 12-9 conference slate. By finishing third in their inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference, the Shockers will be the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and will play a first round matchup against the No. 6 seed Tulsa on Thursday.
