WICHITA, Kan. – Tulane scored 11 runs in the second inning on the way to a 19-4 win over Wichita State in game one of a three game American series.
Trey Vickers went 2-for-3 for the Shockers, while
Josh DeBacker went 1-for-2 with two RBI and a double and
Alec Bohm went 1-for-4 with two RBI and a double.
Starter
Codi Heuer went 1.1 innings and gave up eight earned runs on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts.
Tulane took an early lead in the top of the first. Jonathon Artigues led off with a walk and moved to third on a single by Grant Witherspoon. Kody Hoese's double play ball scored Artigues for a 1-0 Green Wave lead.
The Green Wave opened it up in the second inning with 11 runs on nine hits with two walks and three Shocker errors for a 12-0 lead.
Tulane added two more in the third without a hit for a 14-0 lead.
The Shockers broke up the shutout in the third.
Luke Ritter led off with a double to left field, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a groundout from
Alec Bohm to make the score 14-1.
Tulane used more help from the Shockers in the fourth to add two more runs for a 16-1 lead.
With one out in the fifth,
Travis Young was hit by a pitch and
Greyson Jenista walked. Bohm followed with a double to right field to score Young and
Josh DeBacker doubled to left-center to drive in Jenista and Bohm to cut the lead to 16-4.
The Green Wave added three more in the seventh for the run-rule win.
The Shockers and Green Wave play game two of the series on Sat., April 7 at 2 p.m. and wrap up the series on Sun., April 8 at 12:30 p.m.
