ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Wichita State won its second-straight Mountain Pacific Tournament title on Sunday, taking down Grand Canyon (4-2) in the final.
The Shockers swept San Francisco (4-0) and took down No. 46 New Mexico Saturday to set up a match in the final with Grand Canyon, where they won (4-2) to claim the hardware.
Wichita State never reached doubles play in any of the three matches, winning handily in singles action.
Against the Lopes on Sunday, the Shockers claimed wins in the first, second, third and sixth flights.
Junior
Andrea Caligiana put the Shockers up early in the sixth flight, dropping Justin Cvitanovic in straight sets (6-2, 6-1). In the second flight, Frosa reeled off his second-straight victory over Lorenzo Fucile of Grand Canyon, coasting to a 6-3, 6-3 victory.
The Lopes evened the match at 2, with wins in the fourth and fifth flights. After falling 6-2 to Gregoire Balenci,
Miroslav Herzan battled back in the second set to force a tiebreaker. The tiebreaker went the distance, before Balenci edged past Herzan (7-6(10)) to put GCU in the win column. Lucas Grego and
Eddie Stoica went three-sets in the fifth flight. After splitting the first two sets, (6-4, 3-6) Grego rallied to take down Stoica 6-2 in the third.
The final two matches were in the first and second flights in three-set affairs.
Murkel Dellien stormed back to defeat Valentin Lang. After dropping the first set, (6-1) Dellien won handily (6-4, 6-4) in the final two sets to give WSU a 3-2 lead, and record his seventh victory in a row.
It was a battle in the first flight, where
Haru Inoue took on Mathieu Rajaonah. Inoue prevailed 6-2 in the first flight, before dropping a tiebreaker in the second to force a decisive third set. After trading games, Inoue pulled away to win the match and clinch the win for the Shockers.
The win pushes Wichita State to a 6-5 record, and five-straight wins.

Wichita State will return to the court next Thursday, Mar. 8 with a trip to Norman to take on Oklahoma at 5 p.m. The Shockers return home to take on Nebraska and New Mexico Friday and Sunday, Mar. 9 and 11, at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex in Wichita.
