WSU Knocks off Texas A&M-CC, 4-3

SAN ANTONIO-  Wichita State (8-8) used a late rally to knock off Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at the UTSA Tennis Center in San Antonio.
 
DOUBLES
The Shockers grabbed three victories in doubles action to take a quick 1-0 lead over the Islanders. Shockers Andrea Caligiana and Miroslav Herzan started the victories for WSU, with a 6-2 win over William Mottet and Thomas Rodrigues, improving their record to a team leading 8-5. Eddie Stoica and Andrea Trapani teamed up for just the third time this season, and took down Biyik Akinshemoyin and David Ambrozic 6-4, pushing their record to 2-1 in the third flight. Marius Frosa and Murkel Dellien added a win in the first flight, (6-4) over Francois Kellerman and Okkie Kellerman.
 
SINGLES
Singles action came down to the last match, with both teams trading matches throughout the course of the day. Junior Haru Inoue, who sat out of doubles action, came in and dropped Kellerman in straight sets (6-1, 6-2) pushing WSU to a 2-0 lead. Playing in the first flight for the fifth time, Frosa fell to Mottet (6-0, 6-4). Herzan dropped his second-straight match in flight four to Rodrigues , 7-6, 6-2, to tie the match at two.
 
Wichita State won two of the next three matches to take down the Islanders, who came into the match with an impressive 15-3 record. WSU fell behind 3-2 when O. Kellerman took down Caligiana in three sets, 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-2. Dellien became the first Shocker to reach ten wins in the dual season, when he defeated Carlos Pedrosa, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
 
All the lights were shining bright for freshman Andrea Trapani, with the match tied at three. Trapani, from Italy, came into the match looking for his first collegiate victory in the black and yellow. Trapani traded sets with Kyohei Yamanaka (6-1, 5-7) to set up a winner take all third set. After falling behind early, Trapani came through in the clutch to take down Yamanaka and earn his first win as a Shocker.
 
The Shockers return to the UTSA Tennis Center tomorrow to take on UTSA at 1 p.m. in San Antonio.
