Shockers Double-Double Up on Tulsa in Win

TULSA, Okla. – Rangie Bessard and Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage registered double-doubles to lead Wichita State to a 70-59 win at Tulsa Monday night in the regular season finale.

Wichita State (14-16, 9-7) capped its first season in the American Athletic Conference with its fourth-straight win. The Shockers and Golden Hurricane split the season series after TU won the conference-opener in Wichita. The win also locked Wichita State into the No. 6 seed for this weekend's American Conference Tournament.

Diamond Lockhart led four Shockers in double-figures with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go with four rebounds and four assists. Bessard posted her eighth double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Lozada-Cabbage recorded her second of the season with 12 points and 11 boards.

Angiee Tompkins was nearly the third Shocker with a double-double, finishing with 14 points and eight rebounds.

The Shockers pounded Tulsa (9-20, 3-13) on the glass, outrebounding them 45-33 and outscoring TU in second chance points, 15-3. Both teams shot 38 percent from the field.

WSU was able to secure the win at the free throw line, going 18-for-22.

Erika Wakefield led all scorers with 17 points and Alexis Gaulden added 12 for the Hurricane.

1st Quarter
At the midway point of the opening quarter, it was a low-scoring start with the Shockers leading 7-5. Both teams had attempted seven shots with WSU hitting three and Tulsa only two.

Seven straight points gave Wichita State a 12-5 lead with only 1:15 remaining in the period and would take a 14-8 margin into the second.

Wichita State held Tulsa to just 25 percent and outrebounded the Golden Hurricane 12-6.

2nd Quarter
Tulsa started the period on a 7-2 run to pull within a point, but a three-pointer from Jeliah Preston and inside score from Bessard would push it to 22-18 with 5:21 remaining in the half.

The Shockers had the lead up to six, but seven points from Addison Richards off the bench kept the Golden Hurricane within a possession. Leading by two with only 15 seconds left in the half, a steal and dish from Diamond Lockhart to Cesaria Ambrosio sent Wichita State into the locker room with a 33-29 lead.

Both teams shot nearly identical percentages from the floor with WSU at 39 and TU at 40 percent. Wichita State dominated the rebounding battle, 25-12, in the first 20 minutes. Bessard (6), Lozada-Cabbage (6) and Tompkins (5) grabbed 17 between the three of them.

Bessard also had a game-high 11 points at the half.

3rd Quarter
Five-straight points from Tulsa would start play in the third and give the Hurricane their first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

Lockhart scored five-consecutive points in a 7-0 spurt to give the Shockers a six-point lead at the 3:00 minute mark. Wichita State would then close the period on another 7-0 run behind Bessard free throws, another Lockhart jumper and a three-point play from Tompkins.

Wichita State held a 55-45 lead through three quarters and continued to dominate the glass. Lockhart poured in 10 points in the frame to help extend the lead to double-digits late.

4th Quarter
Scores from Lozada-Cabbage and Tompkins quickly bumped the lead to 14 in the first two-plus minutes. As quickly as Wichita State built its largest lead, Tulsa responded with an equally fast 8-0 run to cut it to six with 4:50 to go.

That would be as close it would get. WSU closed the game on a 9-4 run to pick up another road win. The final 10 points of the game for the Shockers came from the free throw line.
