Shockers Pick Up Road Win at SMU, 52-45

DALLAS – Wichita State held SMU to 27.9 percent shooting to collect a big road win, 52-45, Saturday afternoon in Moody Coliseum.

Wichita State (12-16, 7-7) sweeps the season series with the Mustangs and has won back-to-back games after snapping a four-game slide.

Rangie Bessard led all scorers with 16 points, despite shooting just 5-of-15 from the floor. Keke Thompson was the only other Shocker in double-figures with 12 points to go with six boards.

Angiee Tompkins just missed a double-double with eight points and 10 rebounds. The 10 rebounds marked a season high.

Fans of low-scoring basketball were in for a treat Saturday, as the two teams struggled for much of the afternoon offensively. The Shockers hit 37.5 percent from the field, but sealed the win at the free throw line, going 14-of-19. The Mustangs couldn't get a basket to fall, finishing at 27.9 percent.

SMU misfired on 22 of its 26 attempts from beyond the arc and committed 19 turnovers as well.

Ariana Whitfield led SMU (10-17, 4-10) with 14 points and seven rebounds and McKenzie Adams tallied eight of her 10 points in the opening quarter.

1st Quarter
Wichita State built an early 12-6 lead after hitting five of its first nine attempts and four of the five starters scoring a basket. For SMU, McKenzie Adams would register the first eight points.

The Shockers finished the period shooting 50 percent to help build an 18-13 lead at the end of one.

Adams (8) and Ariana Whitfield (5) would be the only Mustangs to score in the opening frame, while six of the seven Shockers that played in the quarter scored.

2nd Quarter
Over the first five minutes of the quarter, both teams were struggling offensively with WSU outscoring the Mustangs 4-1. SMU was just 5-for-25 (20 percent) from the field but had eight offensive rebounds.

Wichita State pushed its lead to double-digits for the first time at the 3:59 mark on a Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage layup, but that would turn out to be the final points of the half.

The Shockers went the final 3:59 without a score and SMU closed on a 6-0 run to cut the lead to 24-20 at halftime. Neither team reached double-figures in the quarter with SMU outscoring WSU, 7-6.

Both teams would shoot a combined 5-of-23 in the period. Lozada-Cabbage led the Shockers with seven first half points.

3rd Quarter
SMU's offensive struggles carried over to the third quarter, as the Mustangs would miss their first 10 shots to let Wichita State extend its lead to nine. SMU's first basket came with 4:37 left in the quarter to trim the lead to six.

The Mustangs would fail to reach double-digits for the second straight quarter and Wichita State would finish on a 6-0 run. Thompson and Tompkins were responsible for the six points to give the Shockers their largest lead of the game, 40-27, with play moving to the fourth quarter.

Wichita State outscored SMU, 16-7, in the period.

4th Quarter
A three-plus minute scoring drought for the Shockers allowed SMU to shrink the margin to seven with 3:58 to play.

Despite finishing the final 6:24 without a made field goal, Wichita State would hang on thanks to the free throw line. WSU made only one shot in the fourth out of nine attempts.

Ten of the team's 12 points in the frame came from the charity stripe.

SMU had its best quarter of the day, but still couldn't make enough shots down the stretch despite the Shockers' struggles on the offensive end.
