HARTFORD, Conn. – UConn shot 71 percent and had five players in double-figures to lead the top-ranked Huskies to a 124-43 win over Wichita State Saturday afternoon in the XL Center.
Wichita State (10-16, 5-7) saw its skid continue, having lost four straight games and also dropping to 0-1 all-time vs. UConn. The 124 points are the most points allowed in school history.
Rangie Bessard led the Shockers with her 12th 20-point game of the season, finishing with 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting.
The Huskies shot 71 percent for the game, a season high for a WSU opponent and outscored the Shockers 52-0 in points off turnovers. Wichita State committed a season-high 28 turnovers and was outrebounded 35-25.
WSU shot a season-low 32 percent from the field, including a 1-of-15 mark from downtown. UConn's 32 assists also marked a season high by a WSU opponent.
Napheesa Collier led with 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting and Katie Lou Samuelson hit six three-pointers to finish with 22 points. Gabby Williams (17), Azura Stevens (16) and Kia Nurse (14) capped the double-digit scorers for UConn.
1st Quarter
UConn struck early and often by scoring the game's first seven points in the first minute of play. Bessard knocked down two midrange jumpers to get the Shockers on the board, but UConn held a 15-6 lead at the midway point.
The Huskies used a huge 21-2 run to blow the game open in the final few minutes and after one quarter, the Shockers faced a 41-12 deficit.
UConn missed only four shots in the period (17-21) and scored 22 points off 11 Shocker turnovers.
Bessard scored 10 of the team's 12 points in the frame, while Samuelson led all scorers with 13.
2nd Quarter
Bessard (12) and Tompkins (4) scored the first 16 points before a
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage jumper put another Shocker in the scoring column.
Another 14-0 blitz by the Huskies made it 63-18 before going into the locker room with a commanding 67-23 lead.
UConn torched the nets to the tune of 70 percent, while holding the Shockers to just 37 percent. Wichita State committed a season-high 17 first half turnovers, which led to UConn outscoring WSU 35-0 in points off turnovers.
The season high for a Wichita State opponent in assists was 22 coming into the game – UConn handed out 22 in the first half alone.
3rd Quarter
The efficient Husky offense shot 82.4 percent (14-17) in the third and took a 101-39 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Bessard scored eight of the team's 16 points.
4th Quarter
The Huskies opened the final period on a 19-0 run before a Tompkins jumper at the 2:51 mark got WSU on the board.
UConn would limit WSU to just four points in the final quarter to put the finishing touches on the victory.
