WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Houston Cougars Friday, Nov. 9, inside Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers fell by set scores of 19-25, 22-25, 25-22 and 23-25.
Wichita State (12-13, 7-7 American) is scheduled to host SMU Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1 p.m.
Senior
Tabitha Brown posted her team-high seventh double-double of the season with 11 kills and 19 digs, while junior
Alex Koon also had 11 kills to go along with four blocks, leading WSU. In her first match since Sept. 21, sophomore
Emma Wright compiled eight kills and three blocks.
Redshirt freshman
Kora Kauling added a team-high 25 assists, while sophomore
Giorgia Civita posted a match-best 30 digs.
The Shockers led set one 16-14 after a Kauling service ace before the Cougars (16-13, 3-11 American) scored five straight points to gain a 19-16 advantage. Wichita State pulled within two points of the deficit at 20-18 on block assists from
Megan Taflinger and
Brooke Smith, but Houston scored five of the final six points, winning the set, 25-19, to take a 1-0 lead.
In set two, WSU had a 22-18 lead after a kill from Brown only to see the Cougars explode for seven straight points to rally and win the set, 25-22, and increase their lead to 2-0.
Wichita State jumped out to a 7-3 advantage in the fourth set after a pair of Houston attack errors, block assists from Brown and Smith, and an ace from Koon. The Cougars fought back and tied the set, 21-all, before WSU netted four of the final five points in the frame to win, 25-22, trimming the match deficit to 2-1.
Set four was tied, 7-7, prior to the Shockers going on a 4-0 run to jump out to an 11-7 advantage. Brown, Wright and Civita all had kills during the spurt. Houston didn't go away though, and rattled off seven consecutive points to take a 14-11 lead. Wichita State tied the set, 22-22, on another kill from Brown, but the Cougars scored three of the final four points to secure the match victory.
Megan Duncan tallied a match-high 15 kills to go along with 19 digs, leading Houston.
The Cougars outhit the Shockers in the contest, .187 to .148, and had 10 blocks compared to just eight for WSU.
