Shockers Round Out Season with Two Home Matches

The Wichita State volleyball team wraps up its 2018 regular season with a pair of home matches Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Saturday, Nov. 24, inside Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers (12-16, 7-10) are slated to conclude American Athletic Conference action with a contest vs. Tulsa (19-10, 11-6) Wednesday at 7 p.m. before hosting North Texas (16-16, 11-3 Conference USA) for the regular season finale Saturday at 2 p.m.

• Wichita State enters the week with an overall record of 12-16 and a 7-10 record in The American after dropping a pair of matches at Temple and UConn Nov. 16 and 18. The Shockers have lost their last four matches.
• The Shockers are ranked 90th in the most recent NCAA RPI rankings. Wichita State has played the 18th-toughest overall schedule and third-toughest non-conference slate in NCAA Division I volleyball.
• Wichita State is led by senior Tabitha Brown (299 kills, 15 aces, 283 digs, 33 blocks), redshirt freshmen Megan Taflinger (283 kills, 25 aces) and Kora Kauling (547 assists, 113 digs), and sophomore Giorgia Civita (634 digs, 85 assists, 15 aces).
• Sophomore libero Giorgia Civita set a new Wichita State single-season record for digs with 634 entering Wednesday's contest. The previous record was 628, which was set by Kelly Broussard in 2007.
• Sophomore Regan Stiawalt tallied a career-best 13 kills in the Shockers' match at UConn Nov. 18.
• Civita leads The American and ranks third nationally in digs per set (5.87). She also paces the conference and is 12th nationally in total digs (634).
• Civita tallied 32 digs in Wichita State's three-set loss to SMU Nov. 11. The 32 digs were the second-most in a three-set match in NCAA Division I this season and the second-most in program history in three-set contests.
• In Wichita State's matches against Houston and SMU Nov. 9 and 11, sophomore Emma Wright posted 13 kills, one ace, one dig and seven blocks. This was Wright's first action since WSU's match vs. Tulane Sept. 21, when she was injured.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricane are 19-10 overall and 11-6 in The American after winning at Temple Nov. 18, 3-0. Through 29 matches, the Golden Hurricane are led by senior outside hitter Emily Thorson (337 kills, 30 service aces, 17 solo blocks), junior setter Mariah Pardo (897 assists, 258 digs) and junior defensive specialist/libero Taylor Horsfall (591 digs, 20 service aces, 123 assists). As a team, Tulsa is averaging 12.7 kills, 11.7 assists, 1.1 aces, 17.6 digs and 2.1 blocks per set. The Golden Hurricane lead The American in digs. Tulsa is under the leadership of fifth season head coach Ryan Wills.

Wednesday's match against the Golden Hurricane will be the 45th meeting in the all-time series that dates all the way back to 1976. The Shockers lead the series, 30-14, but lost
to the Golden Hurricane earlier this season in Tulsa, Okla, 3-2.

Last Meeting vs. the Golden Hurricane
The Wichita State volleyball team fell to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 3-2, in the annual Havoc in the Heartland match Saturday evening, Sept. 29, inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Shockers lost by match scores of 41-39, 20-25, 25-18, 15-25 and 17-19. Redshirt freshman Megan Taflinger led Wichita State with a career-high 24 kills and 17 digs for her second-career double-double, while senior Kali Eaken added a career-best 68 assists, and Giorgia Civita compiled a career-high 42 digs.

About North Texas
The North Texas Mean Green enter the week with an overall record of 16-16 and are 11-3 in Conference USA after falling at Rice Nov. 17, 3-1. Through 32 matches, North Texas is paced by sophomore outside hitter Valerie Valerian (419 kills, 24 assists, 20 service aces, 309 digs, 40 blocks) and senior setter Karley York (1,167 assists, 71 kills, 20 service aces, 315 digs, 41 blocks). As a team, UNT is averaging 12.7 kills, 11.7 assists, 1.2 aces, 14.2 digs and two blocks per set. The Mean Green are under the direction of sixth season head coach Andrew Palileo.

Series History vs. North Texas
Saturday's season finales vs. the Mean Green will be the 11th meeting in the all-time series that dates back to 1975. Wichita State leads the series, 8-2, after defeating UNT earlier this season in Denton, Texas, 3-0.

Last Meeting vs. the Mean Green
Alex Koon hit .500 and Emma Wright collected a career-high three services aces to help the Wichita State volleyball team post its first sweep of the season with a 3-0 victory over the North Texas Mean Green Friday evening, Sept. 14, in the North Texas Challenge at the North Texas Volleyball Center. The Shockers won by set scores of 25-23, 25-15 and 25-19.


Koon Voted to Google Cloud Academic All-District Team
Wichita State volleyball junior outside hitter Alex Koon was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District® Second Team, CoSIDA announced on Thursday, Nov. 15. This is Koon's second straight Academic All-District® honor, as she was a first team selection last season. A native of Williamsburg, Va., Koon boasts a 3.98 GPA as a psychology major at Wichita State. The Google Cloud Academic All-District® team recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.
