OPENING TIPS:
***Wichita State (1-2) takes on Appalachian State (1-2) in a consolation bracket semifinal matchup at the Charleston Classic. The 3:30 p.m. CT (4:30 p.m. ET) tip airs on ESPNU.
***WSU fell to Davidson, 57-53, in Thursday night's quarterfinal round. The seniors carried the scoring load --
Markis McDuffie (18 points) and
Samajae Haynes-Jones (15 points, five assists) accounted for 33 of WSU's 53 points. The Shockers shot just 30.8% and were 8-of-30 from three.
***McDuffie, the reigning American Athletic Conference player of the week, has scored 50 points over the last two games. He's averaging a team-best 19.3 points and is 10-of-21 from three.
***Haynes-Jones (12.3 points) leads the team in assists (5.7), steals (2.0) and minutes (35.3).
Â
SERIES WITH APPALACHIAN STATE:
***WSU is 1-1 against App State (1-0 under
Gregg Marshall).
***Going back to the 2006-07 season, Appalachian State is one of just five schools that have won a non-conference regular season game at Charles Koch Arena. The Mountaineers claimed a 70-68 Bracket Busters win on Feb. 17, 2007.
***The following year, the Shockers avenged that defeat with a 62-53 win in Boone, N.C. (Marshall's first road win as Shocker head coach).
Â
DAVIDSON LEFTOVERS:
***McDuffie has 911 career points. He needs just 89 more to become the 47th member of WSU's 1,000-point club.
***McDuffie's 38 minutes were a career-high.
***The Shockers are 1-2 for the first time since the 2007-08 season – Marshall's first at WSU.
Â
A SHOCKER WIN WOULD… Â
… improve their record to 2-2.
… move them into the fifth-place game (Sunday, 12:30 p.m. CT, ESPNU) against the winner of Alabama/Ball State.
… give them a 2-1 lead in the all-time series with Appalachian State.
… up
Gregg Marshall's career mark to 482-183 in 21 seasons; 288-100 in 12 seasons at WSU.
… give WSU a 73-17 (.811) record in regular season non-conference games since the start of the 2011-12 season.
Â
A SHOCKER LOSS WOULD…
… lower their record to 1-2.
… drop them into the seventh-place game (Sunday, 10 a.m. CT on ESPN3) against the Alabama/Ball State loser.
… give App State a 2-1 lead in the all-time series.
… lower
Gregg Marshall's career mark to 481-184 in 21 seasons; 287-101 in 12 seasons at WSU.
… be less good than a win.
