CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Cold shooting doomed Wichita State in a 57-53 loss to Davidson Thursday evening in the Charleston Classic quarterfinals.

Markis McDuffie scored a team-high 18 points and
Samajae Haynes-Jones added 15 points and five assists, but the Shockers (1-2) shot just 30.8 percent from the field and were 8-of-30 from three (.267).

WSU (1-2) will face Appalachian State (1-2) in Friday's consolation semifinals. Tipoff is set for 3:30 p.m. CT on ESPNU.

WSU held a Davidson team that came in averaging 81.0 points per game to 57 points on 36.5 percent from the floor but had no answer for Jon Axel Gudmundsson. The Davidson junior finished with 33 points on 9-of-14 shooting and hit 12-of-13 free throw attempts. The rest of the Wildcats combined for just 24 points on 38 shots.

McDuffie played a career-high 38 minutes. He was 7-of-19 from the floor, including 3-of-6 from three.

The Shockers outrebounded Davidson, 44-35.
Erik Stevenson had a team-high eight rebounds to go with seven points and three steals.

WSU scored the first five points of the second half to stretch a five-point lead to 10.

The Shockers went the next seven minutes without scoring, and Davidson mounted an 11-0 run to take a 38-37 lead with 10:23 to go.

Gudmundsson scored 16 of the 19 Davidson points the rest of the way.

McDuffie stopped the slide with a three-pointer and a transition layup to put the Shockers back up to 42-38. They wouldn't trail again until the final minute.

Gudmundsson tied the game at 50 with a three-point play. His three-pointer gave the Wildcats a 53-50 edge with 53 seconds on the clock. WSU came up empty on the ensuing trip, and Gudmundsson made a two-possession game with two free throws.

Haynes-Jones banked in a three to cut the lead back to 55-53 with three seconds left, but two more Gudmunsson free throws iced the game.

WSU missed 28 of its 35 second-half attempts.

The Shockers are 1-2 for the first time since the 2007-08 season – Marshall's first at WSU.
