WICHITA, Kan.- The Wichita State softball team continued its fall campaign with a 21-1 victory over Seminole State on Friday at Wilkins Stadium.
Senior
Laurie Derrico led the Shockers with four RBI and a 3-for-5 outing at the plate while junior
Madison Perrigan and sophomore
Caitlin Bingham added three RBI each. Wichita State's pitchers limited Seminole State to one hit and came up with 14 combined strikeouts.
After Seminole State took a 1-0 lead through the first 3.5 innings, the Shockers jumped out to a commanding lead thanks to 10 runs in the bottom of the fourth. A triple from Derrico scored the first three runs for Wichita State, with a single from Perrigan giving the Shockers a 4-1 lead. Sophomore
Neleigh Herring added a triple that drove in another run and a single from freshman
Lauren Mills brought Herring home.
Senior
Bethany Canada continued the fourth inning tear, hitting a single down the left field line that extended the Shocker lead. Two bases loaded walks scored two more runs for Wichita State, with sophomore
Kaylee Huecker capping off the 10-run inning with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Wichita State kept the momentum going in the bottom of the fifth with seven runs, starting with home runs from junior
Ryleigh Buck and Perrigan. After the Shockers scored off a Seminole State error, sophomore
Bailee Nickerson added an RBI single to left field. Bingham's single to center field added two more runs.
Two runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to RBI from Derrico and Perrigan extended the lead 19-1, with the Shockers adding two more runs in the seventh and ninth innings.
Wichita State concludes its fall season at Kansas on Oct. 12 in Lawrence.
