Fourth Quarter Comeback Snaps WSU's Streak

GREENVILLE, N.C. – ECU erased an 11-point fourth quarter deficit to storm back and defeat Wichita State, 77-67, Tuesday night in Minges Coliseum.

Wichita State's (10-13, 5-4) season-high five-game win streak came to an end in the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Rangie Bessard led all players with 22 points, her second straight 20-point outing. She also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists. Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage recorded her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out in the final minutes.

Keke Thompson scored nine of her 11 points in the first half, highlighted by her halfcourt three-pointer at the buzzer going into halftime.

As a team, Wichita State finished the game at 44 percent, but hit just 1-of-10 attempts from beyond the arc. ECU bumped its percentage to 46 percent thanks to a red-hot fourth quarter. The Shockers finished with 20 turnovers to go along with 20 assists. It's the second straight game with 20 or more assists.

Lashonda Monk led the Pirates with 19 points and seven assists. Mickayla Sanders added 13, Alex Frazier and Thais Oliveira added 12 apiece and Salita Green scored 10 to round out the Pirate scoring leaders.

1st Quarter
Tompkins came in and scored eight quick points in helping the Shockers get out to an early 16-13 lead with less than two minutes to go in the period. Back-to-back three-pointers for ECU gave them a 20-18 lead at the end of one.

Tompkins led all scorers with eight points in just five minutes. Both teams shot 47 percent from the field, but ECU knocked down three triples to help take a lead into the second.

The Shockers dished out seven assists on nine made field goals and outrebounded the Pirates 12-7.

2nd Quarter
With ECU leading 22-18, the Shockers put together a 10-0 run to retake the lead, 28-22, with 5:00 minutes left in the half. Lozada-Cabbage scored six of the team's 10 points in the run.

Alyssia Faye then scored six consecutive points and an elbow jumper from Lozada-Cabbage made it 36-28 with 1:30 on the clock.

Following a missed ECU free throw with five seconds remaining, Thompson let go a heave from halfcourt that banked in as time expired to send the Shockers into the locker room with a 39-31 lead.

Thompson led Wichita State with nine points, while Lozada-Cabbage and Tompkins added eight apiece. Wichita State held the Pirates to 38 percent shooting, while converting on 55 percent of its field goal attempts.

Both teams finished the half with double-digit turnovers, but the Shockers dominated the glass, 23-10.

3rd Quarter
Scores from Bessard and Cesaria Ambrosio gave Wichita State its first double-digit lead and then a steal and score from Thompson made it 47-33 to force an ECU timeout at the 7:41 mark.

Two more Bessard free throws gave WSU a 16-point lead, but ECU answered with six straight to cut the lead to 10.

Bessard finished the quarter with 13 of the team's 19 points to give the Shockers a 58-47 lead as play shifted to the final quarter.

The Shocker defense held the Pirates to 6-of-16 in the quarter.

4th Quarter
ECU cut the deficit to just five barely two minutes into the quarter thanks to an 8-2 run. The lead then shrunk to 62-59 after another easy layup in transition. The Pirates outscored Wichita State 12-4 in the opening 4:35 of the period.

The Pirates' pressure defense turned an 11-point deficit to start the fourth into a 71-62 lead with 1:31 to play. ECU took all the momentum behind a devastating 16-0 run.

ECU iced the game at the free throw line, making 10-of-11 free throw attempts in the quarter. Wichita State was outscored in the fourth, 30-9, while also committing seven turnovers. The Shockers hit only three of their 15 attempts, while ECU saved its best quarter for last, going 9-of-12.
