COLUMBIA, Mo.—Wichita State's doubles duo of
Gabriela Porubin and
Fatima Bizhukova continued their dominance in doubles play collecting two victories Saturday morning in Columbia, Mo.
Porubin and Bizhukova took down Carolina Costamagna and Anna Turco of Kansas State, 6-1, to start doubles action in the final day of the Mizzou Invite. The highly anticipated match that was postponed on Thursday took place directly after, and No.16 Bizhukova and Porubin took down the No. 32 Mizzou tandem of Marta Oliveira and Amina Ismail to remain perfect on the weekend.
WSU had two players retire due to injury in singles play Saturday; Bizhukova was forced to retire in the second set against Hanna Sohn of Memphis and
Ting-Ya Hsu retired in the first set due to injury against Claire Sullivan of Memphis.
Memphis' Laura Bente defeated Porubin 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(4), while
Alexandra Lazarova suffered her first loss in singles play to Katherine Cao 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(6).
"Going winless in our final round of singles will leave a sour taste but we'll use that as motivation heading into this next training block", head coach
Colin Foster said.
Lazarova and
Ting-Ya Hsu were defeated in doubles action by Meghan King and Ines Mesquita of Kansas State 7-6(5).
"It was a productive weekend." Foster said. Lots of positives in doubles and in first two days of singles play."
For the weekend, freshman Lazarova started off the season on a high note. She compiled a 2-1 record in singles play, beating the likes of Kansas States' King Thursday, 6-1, 6-4 and Elllie Wright of Mizzou, 7-6(4), 4-6, 1-0(8). Her only singles loss came Saturday to Katherine Cao of Memphis, 5-7, 6-4, 0-1(6). In doubles play Lazarova went 1-1, teaming up with
Marta Bellucco to defeat Laura Bente and Lina Hohnold of Memphis 6-3.
Sophomore Bellucco had a successful weekend, going 2-1 in singles play and 2-0 in doubles action. Bellucco defeated Costamagna of Kansas State 7-5, 7-5 and Mizzous' Mackenzy Middlebrooks 6-4, 6-4.
The dynamic duo of Porubin and Bizhukova are off to a hot start, going 3-0 at the Invite, including a marquee win against Oliveira and Ismail of Mizzou who started the fall ranked No. 32. They also defeated Kansas States' Costamagna and Turco, 6-1 and Memphis' Sohn and Cao, 6-1.
WSU will next be in action Sept. 30- Oct. 9, when they head to Pacific Palisades, Calif. to take part in the ITA - All American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club.
