#50 Shockers Topple #35 Tulsa 4-3

Box Score TULSA, Okla. - The No. 50-ranked Wichita State women's tennis team won its sixth match in-a-row, topping Tulsa in a 4-3 contest this evening at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Wichita State won the first three of four singles matches, clinching the match 4-1, but the teams played out the dual.

The Shockers (11-7) started off strong, winning the first two doubles matches to take the doubles point. Marta Bellucco and Giulia Guidetti won their third-straight match together, defeating Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner 6-2 in the third flight. Gabriela Porubin and Fatima Bizhukova soon topped Mahitha Dadireddy and Ksenia Laskutova 6-3 in the top flight. The win improves Porubin and Bizhukova doubles record to 12-5 when playing in the first flight. Tanaporn Thongsing and Ting-Ya Hsu led their second-flight match 4-3 before going unfinished.

"In doubles, this was the first time all year that all six players played fearless, aggressive tennis, and it made a world of difference," said head coach Colin Foster. " Tulsa plays very strong doubles, and to punch them in the mouth right off the bat was big for our confidence."

In singles play, Marcelina Cichon started with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Ting-Ya Hsu, tying up the dual for Tulsa. WSU rattled off three-straight wins after Hsu's loss to seal the match. Bellucco won 6-4, 6-3 in the sixth flight against Ploner, improving her record in that flight to 5-0. Porubin took the second flight match with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Rongrong Leenabanchong. Bizhukova capped the dual with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Okalova in the fourth flight. Bizhukova (14-4 now in duals) has now won seven consecutive matches, and is 11-1 when playing in the fourth flight. In the top flight, Laskutova stopped Guidetti's three-match winning streak in a close three-set contest, winning 6-7 (2-7), 6-3, 1-0 (12-10). The Golden Hurricane added one final point with another three-set win, as Dadireddy topped Thongsing 1-6, 7-6 (10-8), 1-0 (10-4) in the third flight.

"In singles, we continue to grow and believe that we can compete with anyone," said Foster. "We are playing some of our best tennis down the stretch of the year, and I'm excited to see what more this team can accomplish."

The loss drops Tulsa to 16-6 on the year.
