WSU Takes Ninth-Straight MVC Title in Sweeps

4/22/2017 4:30:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's tennis team captured their ninth-straight regular season Missouri Valley Conference championship today, sweeping both Illinois State and Bradley 7-0 on Senior Day at the Coleman Tennis Complex. WSU has now won 86 consecutive duals against MVC opponents.

Illinois State (11-11, 5-2 MVC) was shorthanded on the day, so the Shockers quickly captured the doubles point when Gabriela Porubin/Fatima Bizhukova defeated Marcia Tere-Apisah/Jelena Vujicic 6-3 in the top flight. Marta Bellucco/Giulia Guidetti won their third-flight match by forfeit, and Ting-Ya Hsu/Tanaporn Thongsing never started their match, since the point was decided.

The Shockers started singles play with two more automatic points, since the Redbirds had no players available in the No. 5 or 6 flights. Hsu won her fourth-flight match after Valerija Gercar had to retire due to injury. Hsu led 3-0 before the match was called. Porubin defeated Gabriela Sprague 6-1, 6-2 in the third flight. In the top flight, Guidetti beat Tere-Apisah 6-2, 6-1. Both players were undefeated in MVC play in the No. 1 spot. Thongsing closed out the scoring, topping Vujicic in the second flight 6-4, 7-6 (1).

The win sealed WSU's ninth consecutive regular season MVC title, and also guarantees the top seed in the conference tournament.

WSU also won the doubles point against Bradley. Thongsing/Hsu handled Ariel Dechter/Aimee Manfredo 6-1 in the second flight. Porubin/Bizhukova soon followed with a 6-3 victory over Ashley Thai/Natalia Barbery in the top flight. Marija Mastilovic and Guidetti led Malini Wijesinghe/Alexa Brandt 5-2 in the third flight, but went unfinished.

Porubin kicked off singles competition with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brandt in the third flight. She has now won eight of her last 10 matches, and finishes the regular season with a 23-11 (14-6 duals) overall record, good for second-best on the team. Bizhukova picked up her 11th-straight win, defeating Barbery 6-4, 2-0 (retired) in the second flight. In the No. 4 flight, Hsu sealed the match and won her fifth-in-a-row by beating Wijesinghe 6-0, 6-1. Mastilovic picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the sixth flight to put her at 10-10 overall on the year, and giving her five-straight singles wins. Thongsing played in the No. 1 spot for the first time this season, and topped Dechter 6-0, 6-2. Thongsing finishes the regular season with a team-best 27-9 overall record, and has a winning record in every flight she's played in. The senior from Thailand won 20 matches last year. Bellucco closed out the scoring with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory in the fifth flight.

Thongsing, the lone senior on the team, was honored after the match.

"Tana has had an outstanding year and contributed in so many ways to this team's success on and off the court," said head coach Colin Foster. "For the team, it was a very business-like performance today and we are excited to be heading to the conference tournament as the number one seed."

The loss drops Bradley to 10-13 (1-5 MVC) on the year.

The Shockers close out the regular season with a 15-8 record, and a perfect 7-0 conference record. In singles, WSU players went a combined 35-1 against Valley foes, with Hsu suffering the lone loss. WSU has won 10 of their last 11 duals, which include wins over then-ranked No. 43 SMU and No. 35 Tulsa.
