Box Score IOWA CITY, Iowa – The No. 50 Wichita State women's team saw its eight-match winning streak come to an end, dropping a 4-3 decision to Iowa Monday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis Complex.
The Hawkeyes (15-6) scored the doubles point, starting with Elise Van Heuvelen/Adorabol Huckleby defeating
Fatima Bizhukova/
Gabriela Porubin 6-3 in the top flight. The loss ends Bizhukova and Porubin's six-match winning streak - their first loss in nearly a month - when they lost to No. 77 Tamuna Kutubidze/Maria Kononova of North Texas back on March 12. Montana Crawford/Aimee Tarun sealed the point with a 6-4 victory over
Giulia Guidetti/
Marta Bellucco in the third flight.
Tanaporn Thongsing/
Ting-Ya Hsu were tied with Zoe Douglas/Kristen Thoms at 4-4 in the second flight before going unfinished.
In singles play, Douglas put Iowa up 2-0 with her 6-3, 6-1 victory over Porubin in the second flight. The loss ends Porubin's six-match singles streak. Thongsing scored the first Shocker point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anastasia Reimchen in the third flight, giving the senior 25 overall singles wins on the season. In the top flight, Van Heuvelen beat Guidetti 6-3, 6-2 to put the Hawkeyes up 3-1 in the dual. WSU battled back, as Bizhukova picked up her tenth consecutive singles win by defeating Crawford 7-5, 6-1 in the fourth flight. Fatima is now a sterling 12-1 when playing in the fourth flight. Hsu then won her fifth-flight match, winning 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) over Thoms. The comeback effort would fall just short though, as Huckleby won a three-set match against Bellucco, 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3 in the sixth set to get the win for Iowa.
"We've been in this spot a few times where the opponent gets to three relatively quickly and we do our best to claw our way back into it," said Head Coach
Colin Foster. "Marta saved match points in the second (set) and had some momentum going early in the third, but in the end it was a bit too steep of a hill to climb. For (Ting-Ya), this was another step in her progression. She has been too inconsistent in her practice and her play, and today she was awesome in finding ways to win, as were Tana and Fatima."
With the loss, WSU drops to 13-8 on the season. The Shockers' last loss came on March 8, when the Shockers lost 4-2 against then-No. 6 Texas Tech in Wichita.
Up Next:
The Shockers will look to remain perfect in MVC play and close out the regular season with a doubleheader on Sat., April 22 at the Coleman Tennis Complex. WSU will first host Illinois State at 9 a.m., and then face Bradley that afternoon at 1 p.m.
