LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite taking a 10-3 lead in game two, the Shockers split day one, defeating UTEP in game one, 7-5, and falling to North Texas in game two by a score of 14-10.
Mackenzie Wright led the way for the Shockers on the day, going 4-for-4 in game two and also picking up two hits in game one.
Paige Luellen,
Madison Perrigan,
Mauriana Jamele and Wright all picked up three RBI on the day.
Katie Malone started game one and threw a strong 4.1 innings and allowed just one run on four hits.
Bailey Klitzke then entered the game and threw 2.2 innings, before Malone re-entered for the final out.
For the first time this weekend, the Shockers scored first, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning.
Mackenzie Wright led off the inning with a single. After stealing second,
Paige Luellen crushed a ball off the scoreboard to give Wichita State a 2-0 lead.
Mauriana Jamele was thrown out trying to score from second in the second inning, but in the third inning, after a double and a walk,
Madison Perrigan put a ball over the left field wall to score three runs and push the lead to 5-0.
In the top of the fourth,
Ashley Johnson led off with a single, then three straight hits from Spring, Derrico and Luellen added to runs to the Shocker lead.
UTEP got on the board in the fourth inning with a solo home run. Again in the sixth inning, the Miners added two runs on a two-run home run to make the score, 7-3.
In the seventh, the Miners were able to add two runs before
Katie Malone came in and got the strikeout to end the game giving Wichita State the win, 7-5.
Malone then started game two, throwing four innings and allowing five runs on six hits.
Jenni Brooks then got her second appearance of the season, throwing two innings and allowing seven runs, only two of which were earned. Then Klitzke threw one inning allowing two runs and receiving the loss.
Just like in game one, the Shockers got two runs in the first inning, this time on a double by
Macklin Hitz.
The Mean Green quickly tied the game in the top of the second with a two-run home run. NT then took the lead on a single to left.
Wichita State came right back, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second. Jamele led off with a single. After a sacrifice bunt from Johnson and doubles from Wright and Derrico, the Shockers took a 5-3 lead.
Wichita State extended the lead in the third, scoring two runs on a home run from Jamele to push the lead to 7-3.
With runners on first and third, a ground ball to shortstop scored one run. Then with the bases loaded, Wright singled to center field and scored two runs to push the lead to 10-3.
The Shocker defense made three errors in the top of the fifth, letting North Texas score nine runs on just five hits, taking a 12-10 lead.
The Mean Green added to their lead, tacking on two runs in the top of the seventh to push the game out of reach, winning game two, 14-10.
The Shockers are now 11-5 on the season and will be in action again tomorrow for the final game of the Texas Tech Invitational at 10:30 a.m., against UTEP.
