WICHITA, Kan. – Despite committing four errors in the game, the Wichita State softball team came from four runs down to defeat Nebraska for their fourth straight win in front of 533 fans inside Wilkins Stadium.
Jenni Brooks got the start, and threw 4.1 innings and allowed all five runs, but only one of those runs were earned.
Katie Malone entered the game with one out in the fifth, and threw the final 2.2 innings, allowing just one hit and receiving her 14
th win of the season which moves her into a tie for sixth place in the nation in wins.
The Shocker offense got off to a slow start, but a perfect 3-for-3 day from
McKenzie Adams helped push the Shockers to the victory. Adams had two singles and a triple that scored two runs.
The Shocker defense committed two errors to begin the game, allowing runners on first and third with no outs. After a failed run-down by the Shockers, the Cornhuskers took an early 1-0 lead. Despite allowing two baserunners with no outs, the Shockers got out of the inning with just allowing one run, with the help of a pickoff from
Madison Perrigan.
After a scoreless second, the Cornhuskers led off the third by reaching on an error. The Huskers then moved the runner on a sacrifice bunt and back-to-back singles scored the run to take a 2-0 lead.
Macklin Hitz led off the fourth inning with a solo home run to cut the lead to 2-1, but Nebraska fired right back scoring two runs on an error and adding one more on a single back to the pitcher to make the score, 5-1.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Shocker offense came alive, as the first three batters of the inning reached on a walk. After a single from
Ashley Johnson scored two runs, Adams tripled to right-center to score two more runs and make the score, 6-5.
Mackenzie Wright then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give Wichita State an insurance run, 7-5.
Katie Malone came out to finish the game and after collecting the first two outs, gave up a single. Malone then got the next batter to line out sharply to Wright to end the game and give Wichita State the 7-5 victory.
The Shockers move to 16-10 on the year and stay at 3-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Wichita State will continue conference play on Saturday at noon, as they host Illinois State for a three-game series.
