WSU Walks-off on Drake to Sweep Doubleheader

WICHITA, Kan. – After falling behind 5-0 in game two, the Shockers came from behind to defeat Drake by a score of 6-5 in extra innings to complete the double-header sweep on the first day of Missouri Valley Conference play.

In game one, Katie Malone was able to throw four strong innings and allow just one hit, collecting her 11th win of the season. Bailey Klitzke came in to finish the game and allowed no hits to close out the 10-0 run-rule.

Laurie Derrico was the story offensively in game one, going 2-for-3 including a grand slam to help lead the Shockers. Madison Perrigan also collected two hits in the game and drove in two runs.

Wichita State jumped on the Bulldogs early, after Mackenzie Wright led off the game with a single. After a walk, Perrigan doubled to right field, scoring two runs and giving Wichita State the early 2-0 lead. Perrigan then came around to score and give the Shockers a 3-0 lead.

In the second inning, the Shockers batted around, scoring six runs on five hits. Ashley Johnson and Wright got things started with back-to-back singles. After a walk to Kelli Spring, Derrico hit her sixth home run of the year to extend the lead to 7-0. The Shockers were still able to add two more runs in the inning, and push the lead to 9-0.

The Shockers finished off the scoring by scratching across one more run in the bottom of the third to make the score, 10-0.

Both teams went scoreless for the rest of the game, giving Wichita State their first Missouri Valley Conference win of the year, 10-0 in five innings.

Jenni Brooks got the call in game two, throwing two innings and allowing three runs on six hits. Malone pitched the final six innings and allowed just two runs on four hits with five strikeouts, earning her second win of the day and her 12th of the season.

Drake came out ready to play in game two, scoring early in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead. Again in the third, the Bulldogs were able to add two runs on a home run from Kailee Smith to extend the lead to 4-0.

In the fourth, the Bulldogs scratched across one more run to put the game at 5-0, with all momentum in Drake's favor.

With walks to Wright and Paige Lullen, a double from Spring and a single from Derrico, the Shockers were able to get on the board, scoring two runs to stay in the game and cut the Bulldogs lead to 5-2.

Macklin Hitz then led off the sixth with a solo home run to get the inning started. Wright then reached on a throwing error by the catcher, followed by a fielder's choice for Spring. Both Spring and Wright came around to score in the inning and tie the game at 5.

After a scoreless seventh and top of the eighth, the Wright reached on a one-out single. Kelli Spring then singled on a sacrifice bunt, but the catcher threw the ball down the right field line. After Wright stopped at third, the throw from the right fielder got away from the pitcher covering home and Wright scored to win the game, 6-5.

The Shockers are now 14-10 overall and 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference. They will be in action again tomorrow at 11 a.m., to finish the three game series against Drake
