TULSA, Okla. – After losing their fifth straight game, falling to Montana, 3-1, the Shockers defeated Tulsa for the fourth time in two years to go 1-2 on the weekend.
Wichita State was able to strike first, scoring one run on a double to right-center from
Laurie Derrico, scoring
Kelli Spring from first base to take an early 1-0 lead.
Montana then took the lead on a double to left-center to make the score 2-1.
Again in the fifth, after reaching on a fielder's choice, McGill came around to score to give the Griz a 3-1 lead.
Wichita State was unable to make a comeback and lost game one, 3-1.
Katie Malone started game two and threw a complete game and struck out six batters.
Derrico took the very first pitch of game two and put it over the left field wall to give Wichita State a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the first, the Golden Hurricane tied the game on a double from Maddie Withee.
With one out in the fourth, Tori Stafford hit a two-run home run to give Tulsa a 3-1 lead, but the Shockers came right back, scoring one run in the fifth on an error by the second baseman to cut the lead to one, 3-2.
In the sixth, after back-to-back walks,
McKenzie Adams doubled down the left field line to score two and take a 4-3 lead. Adams then came around to score to extend the lead to 5-3.
After a walk with one out and an infield single with two outs,
Katie Malone walked Maddie Withee on 12 pitches to load the bases with two outs and the Shockers up by two. Malone then struck out the next batter to end the game giving Wichita State a 5-3 win.
The Shockers are now 12-9 overall and finish the weekend with a record of 1-2. The Shockers will be in action again on Thursday as they host LSU on Thursday at 5:00 p.m., inside Wilkins Stadium.
