Shockers Lose 4-3 in Heartbreaker at Huskers

Box Score LINCOLN, Neb. -- The No. 35 Wichita State women's team fell in the third set of the final game against undefeated Nebraska to fall, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Dillon Tennis Center.

Wichita State (5-5) started out on the right track, taking the doubles point with Fatima Bizhukova/Gabriela Porubin defeated Mary Hanna/Paula Del Cueto Castillo 7-5 in the top flight, while Tanaporn Thongsing/Ting-Ya Hsu topped Claire Reifeis/Hayley Haakenstad 6-3 in the third flight. Marta Bellucco/Giulia Guidetti were down in a tight 5-4 match against Lisa Andersson/Vasanti Shinde in the second flight before going unfinished.

The Huskers (11-0) won the second, third, fifth and sixth flight matches in singles play, trading victories with WSU early on. In the top flight, Giulia Guidetti picked up her third straight top-flight win in the last week, topping Reifeis 6-2, 7-6. Bizhukova defeated Hanna 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the fourth flight. Shinde edged Porubin 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 in the second flight to clinch the match for Nebraska.

"I'm really proud of how hard we competed today," said head coach Colin Foster. "We were behind on two of the doubles courts and found a way to get back and win that point. In singles, we dropped five first sets and just kept fighting. It could have gone either way at the end. Gaby put her heart on the line and I know losing the last match is painful, but she should be proud of how hard she fought against a good opponent. We competed well across the board, it just wasn't meant to be. Credit to Nebraska for playing just a little better than us today."

Up Next:
WSU will travel to Norman, Okla. on Sat. March 4 for a noon match with Oklahoma (7-2) at the Headington Family Tennis Center.
