FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The Wichita State women's tennis team lost both matches today at the Dills Indoor Tennis Center. Cornell defeated Wichita State this morning in a tight 4-3 match, avenging their Jan. 29 loss to WSU. Later in the afternoon, Arkansas swept Wichita State 4-0 to end the day.
In doubles play,
Fatima Bizhukova and
Gabriela Porubin quickly dispatched of Cornell's Marika Cusick and Alexandra D'Ascenzo 6-0 in the top flight, but the duos of
Marta Bellucco/
Giulia Guidetti (7-6) and
Ting-Ya Hsu/
Tanaporn Thongsing (6-3) would lose the other two matches to give the doubles point to the Big Red.
Guidetti - currently ranked No. 113 according to Oracle/ITA - defeated Cusick 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 in the top flight, while Porubin won 0-6, 7-5, 6-2 over D'Ascenzo in the second flight, picking up clutch victories in the top two flights to keep the Shockers' hopes alive, but Cornell's Madison Stevens defeated Hsu 7-5, 2-6, 6-4 in the final match in the sixth flight to get the win. Thongsing won 6-0, 6-3 in the fourth flight to account for the Shockers' other point. The win raised Thongsing's team-best singles record to 18-5 on the year.
Against Arkansas, WSU made some slight lineup changes in doubles play by switching Thongsing and Bellucco, but Ana Oparenovic/Mia Jurasic beat Porubin/Bizhukova 5-2 in the top flight and Leolia Jeanjean/Natsuho Arakawa defeated Hsu/Bellucco 6-2 to give the Razorbacks the doubles point.
In singles play, Jeanjean topped Bizhukova 6-1, 6-4 in the third flight, Giulia Pairone beat Hsu 6-3, 6-1 and Jurasic defeated Thongsing 6-3, 6-3 to earn the win for Arkansas. Shannon Hudson (ITA No. 47) was leading Guidetti 6-4, 3-4 in a ranked matchup in the top flight, but went unfinished.
"Cornell came out hungry and with nothing to lose," said head coach
Colin Foster. "We played well and fought hard, (we) just need a little more consistent physical and mental effort at a few spots to break through in a match like that. The freshmen are learning what it takes to be successful at this level, and I know they - and everyone else - will be looking forward to another good opportunity on Friday."
With the two losses, Wichita State drops to 4-4 on the season. The Shockers will host South Alabama on Friday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. The match is currently slated to be played at Wichita Country Club, but is subject to change depending on the weather.
