Shockers Fall in Final Minutes to SIU, 61-58

WICHITA, Kan.  -  The Wichita State women's basketball team dropped a 61-58 decision to Southern Illinois Sunday afternoon inside Charles Koch Arena.

Rangie Bessard led the Shockers with 15 points and 13 rebounds, her sixth double-double of the season. Angiee Tompkins also reached double figures, scoring 11 and grabbing eight rebounds. Tamara Lee added five points, seven assists and three steals.

Kylie Giebelhausen led SIU with 21 points, while Kim Nebo had 12 and nine rebounds, and Rishonda Napier had 10.

To open the third quarter, Aundra Stovall's three early in the shot clock gave WSU the lead back, 31-29, just 11 seconds in. WSU built the lead to five, then extended it to eight, 42-34, on a Jeliah Preston three at 5:53. The Shockers then extended their lead to 10 - its largest of the game - after a Bessard layup at 2:04 before SIU scored to close the quarter with WSU up, 50-42.

In the fourth, SIU whittled away at the Shocker lead with a 6-0 run, down just two points at 7:07, 50-48. Bessard's layup at 6:19 broke a five and a half minute Shocker dry spell, and put WSU up 52-48. SIU took the lead on a Giebelhausen jumper at 2:34. The two teams traded leads before SIU went up 61-58 at 1:01 on a Claussen layup.

Wichita Sate forced five turnovers through the first 5:13 to take an 11-5 lead to force an SIU timeout with 4:47 left in the first quarter. Another Saluki turnover out of the timeout and a Shocker layup put WSU up, 13-5. After two SIU buckets, Tompkins hit a deep three for a 16-9 WSU lead at 3:08. SIU then out-scored WSU, 8-2 over the last three minutes to cut WSU's lead to 18-17 at the end of the quarter.

WSU out-scored SIU, 4-2 over the first 5:10 of the second quarter to hold a 21-19 lead at the 4:50 media timeout. SIU tied it up 30 second later, 21-all, with a layup from Nebo.

After trading baskets SIU went ahead for the second time in the game with a three by Giebelhausen, before Preston answered with a three-point bank shot of her own to tie it again, 26-all.  The teams traded baskets again before SIu took the lead with a Giebelhausen free throw, 29-28, with 14 seconds left in the quarter.

SIU's 29-28 halftime lead came on 40.7 percent shooting (11-27) while WSU shot 40 percent (12-30) for the half. Giebelhausen had 11 points to lead all scorers while Tompkins had seven points for the Shockers. Bessard had nine boards at the break.

Wichita State is next in action Feb. 17 at Illinois State, and Feb. 19 at Bradley.
