STILLWATER, Okla. – Loryn Goodwin and Kaylee Jensen provided a dominant 1-2 punch in leading Oklahoma State to a 91-67 victory over Wichita State Tuesday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
Wichita State (0-2) found itself in a hole early on and never could really find a groove on either end of the floor. Oklahoma State (2-0) has now won the last three meetings between the two programs.
Angiee Tompkins led the Shockers with a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds in her first start of the season. Seventeen of her 19 came in the first half to keep Wichita State afloat. Her 19 points were one shy of tying a career high.
Rangie Bessard added 17 points and five boards and
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage scored all 11 of her points after halftime.
Goodwin led all scorers with 24 points to go with six rebounds and seven assists. Jensen did most of her damage in the first 20 minutes, but still finished with 19 points. Braxtin Miller knocked down three from long range to finish with 13 points off the bench.
As a team WSU shot 39 percent, including 6-of-18 from behind the line. OSU converted on 53 percent of its attempts and an impressive 10-of-20 from three. The Shockers' first two opponents have shot 59 and 53 percent from the field.
The Shockers did outrebound the bigger Cowgirl squad, 38-33, but turned the ball over 19 times leading to 21 fast break points for OSU.
1st Quarter
Loryn Goodwin and Kaylee Jensen combined to score the first eight points of the game to give Oklahoma State an 8-0 lead in the opening 2:15 to force a Wichita State timeout. The OSU duo of Goodwin and Jensen would score 16 of the first 18 points for the Cowgirls.
A three-pointer and a long two from Tompkins finally got WSU on the board. Tompkins would score 10 of the team's 16 points in the opening quarter. Bessard added four and
Alyssia Faye knocked down her first field goal as a Shocker, but it was all OSU in the first.
The Cowgirls led 33-16 after shooting 72 percent overall and 66 percent (4-of-6) from beyond the arc. Jensen led OSU with 11 points and Goodwin was perfect from the field for nine points.
2nd Quarter
Take out Tompkins' 5-for-8 start from the field, the rest of the team was just 3-for-12. At the midway point Oklahoma State had doubled up on its lead, 46-23.
At halftime, Oklahoma State held a 55-33 lead behind a combined 32 points from Goodwin and Jensen. Both players scored 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field.
Tompkins led all scorers with 17 first half points on 7-of-11 shooting. She also grabbed a team-best six boards. The rest of the team was 6-of-20. Wichita State shot 42 percent overall, including 4-of-8 from downtown, while Oklahoma State lit up the WSU defense to the tune of 65 percent (5-of-11 from three).
3rd Quarter
WSU scored the first seven points out of halftime to cut the Cowgirls' lead to 55-40, but immediately responded with an 8-2 run to go back up 63-42 with 4:54 left in the period. Bessard and
Diamond Lockhart tallied the Shockers' first nine points.
The Shockers fought back and outscored the Cowgirls in the quarter, 19-16. Heading into the final 10 minutes Wichita State still trailed 71-52. Bessard led the Shockers with eight points in the third.
4th Quarter
To open the final quarter WSU missed seven of its first eight field goal attempts to allow Oklahoma State to add to its lead, 82-56.
Lozada-Cabbage went on a scoring run of eight consecutive late in the quarter to push her into double-figures for the game.
The Cowgirls won the quarter 20-15 to close the game with the final, 91-67.
