CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Wichita State (5-10, 0-4) dropped a 77-54 loss at Southern Illinois (8-8, 2-3) as the Salukis converted on 13-of-24 three-pointers Friday night at SIU Arena.
WSU had a hot shooting start and was down one, 19-18, after the first quarter, before SIU closed the door by winning the second quarter, 16-9, the third quarter, 23-16, and the fourth quarter, 19-11.
WSU was led in scoring by
TaQuandra Mike's 14 points.
Rangie Bessard had 12 for WSU, but SIU's Kylie Giebelhausen had 22 points to lead all scorers, which included seven three pointers. SIU's Rishonda Napier added 18 points, including six treys.
WSU had 16 turnovers that turned into 25 points for the Salukis while WSU created just eight SIU turnovers.
The Shockers shot 71.4 percent (5-7) in the first five minutes to take a 12-10 lead at the media timeout at 4:!7.
Sabrina Lozada-Cabbage, in her second-straight start, had five points of the first 12. The Salukis then out-scored the Shockers, 9-6, over the last half of the quarter. Giebelhausen had seven points in the frame to lead all scorers as the Shockers' shooting fell to 57.1 (8-14).
SIU took control of the second quarter and out-scored WSU, 16-9, to take a 35-27 halftime lead. Giebelhausen added two more three-pointers for SIU.
For the half, WSU out-shot the Salukis, 46.2 percent (12-26) to 39.3 percent (11-28). But six treys and seven free throws made gave SIU the advantage. WSU had three three-pointers and did not go to the line in the first half. Gibelhausen led all scorers with 13 points in the first half.
SIU extended the lead to 40-27 by the 8:40 mark of the third quarter with a 5-0 run to open the second half. WSU answered with a 7-0 run to close the gap to eight, 42-34, at 5:45.
Giebelhausen's fifth three of the game, and a consecutive trey by Napier, gave SIU a 49-36 lead at 4:08. SIU extended the lead to 15, 58-43, by the end of the third.
In the fourth, SIU again extended the lead, from 15 to 18, to force a Shocker timeout at 6:48, and the Shockers never closed the gap as SIU took the 77-54 win.
Wichita State is next in action 2 p.m., Sunday at Evansville, to wrap up the two-game road swing.
