SAN ANTONIO, Texas – UTSA used 31 kills from Dajana Boskovic to come back to beat Wichita State 3-2 in the championship match of the Roadrunners Roundup. The Roadrunners won by scores of 25-21, 20-25, 21-25, 25-16 and 15-10.
Mikaela Raudsepp led the Shockers with 17 kills, while
Katy Dudzinski had a career-high 12 kills and
Kara Maleski had a career-high six kills.
Emily Hiebert had 51 assists and 18 digs, while
Giorgia Civita tied her career-high with 21 digs.
Hiebert and
Abbie Lehman were both named to the all-tournament team.
The two teams traded points in the first set until the Roadrunners used three-straight kills to take an 8-6 lead. The Shockers answered with a kill from
Mikaela Raudsepp and two from
Regan Peare to take a 9-8 lead. The set continued to go back and forth until UTSA used a 5-0 run to take a 22-18 lead. The Roadrunners won the set 25-21.
The Shockers took a 6-3 lead in the second set after a kill from
Tabitha Brown. The Roadrunners answered with a 3-0 run to tie it at six. The two teams traded points until the Shockers used a kill from
Kara Maleski, a Roadrunner hitting error and a
Katy Dudzinski block to take a 17-14 lead. Again the Roadrunners answered with a 3-0 run to tie it at 17. A Hiebert kill, a Roadrunner error and a Dudzinski kill put the Shockers up 21-18 and a Maleski kill and Raudsepp service ace pushed the lead to 24-20. WSU won the set 25-20 on a Roadrunner hitting error.
Two blocks from Raudsepp gave WSU an 11-8 lead in the third set. A Maleski kill increased the lead to 14-9 and two-straight kills from
Abbie Lehman put the Shockers in front 17-11. UTSA slowly pulled back into the match at 19-17, but the Shockers closed out the set with another kill from Lehman for a 25-21 win.
A Lehman kill gave WSU an early 4-3 lead in the fourth set, but the Roadrunners used an 8-1 run to take an 11-5 lead. The Shockers responded with a 4-0 run to pull within 11-9, but the Roadrunners pulled away for a 25-16 win.
UTSA took an early 8-4 lead in the fifth set, but the Shockers scored two-straight to pull within 8-6. The Roadrunners answered and went on to win the set 15-10.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., Sept. 23 at Missouri State at 7 p.m.
