VideoWICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's tennis team tackled Bradley 4-0 in Missouri Valley Conference semifinal action and tied a school record with its 16th-consecutive victory.
The Shockers (26-3) advanced to Sunday's championship match against either Drake or Southern Illinois, beginning at 1:00 p.m. CT at WSU's Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex. The Shocker men also earned a spot in the finals (which will be played at 10:00 a.m. Sunday), marking the seventh-straight year that both teams have reached the title round.
WSU last tasted defeat on Feb. 22 at Arkansas. The team's 16-straight wins ties the 1992-93 squad, coached by Les Stafford, for the longest run in school history. Notably, the 1993 Shockers saw their streak come to an end against Drake, at home, in the MVC championship match.
In Saturday's victory over Bradley, the Shockers won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to claim the first point. The team of
Rebecca Pedrazzi and
Aleksandra Trifunovic improved to 28-9 and won its 14th-straight decision. Pedrazzi (31-9 overall doubles record) pulled to within two wins of the single-season school record.
Giulia Guidetti scored WSU's first singles win of the day, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4, to improve on her school-record victory total. She's now 37-5 (23-1 in duals).
Julia Schiller added a 6-1, 6-0 win of her own at No. 3 singles, and Trifunovic clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at the No. 5 spot.
Abby Stevens (No. 6) led 6-2, 3-2,
Gabriela Porubin (No. 1) was up 6-1, 1-4 in the second set, and Pedrazzi (No. 2) was even in the first set at 6-6.
WSU also extended on a handful of other streaks, earning its 78th-consecutive win over MVC foes (dating back to 2008), its 22nd-straight MVC Tournament match, it's 50th-straight April dual, and its 34th-in-a-row in Wichita.
