WICHITA, Kan. -- The Wichita State women's tennis team - ranked 22nd in the Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings - reached the 20-win plateau for the seventh time in school history with a 4-0 sweep of Drake, Sunday morning at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
WSU (20-3) banked its third 20-win season under head coach
Colin Foster and could equal the school record by sweeping its final four regular season matches and winning the MVC Tournament. The 2006-07 Shockers finished 27-3.
WSU needed just over 90 minutes to close out visiting Drake (12-9, 1-2 MVC), winning the doubles point and then clinching with singles wins on courts 4-6.
The 76th-ranked doubles tandem of
Gabriela Porubin and
Julia Schiller took down Drake's Mariel Ante and Tess Herder, 6-2, and
Rebecca Pedrazzi and
Aleksandra Trifunovic extended their winning streak to nine matches and improved to 23-9 with a win on court No. 2.
Abby Stevens rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
Giulia Guidetti won her 11th-straight match and improved to 32-5 with a victory at the No. 4 spot, and Trifunovic closed out the dual with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 5.
