Photo GalleryWICHITA, Kan. -- No. 22 Wichita State swept No. 48 Texas-Arlington by a score of 4-0 Thursday afternoon at the Sheldon Coleman Tennis Complex.
WSU (18-3) extended its home winning streak to 29 matches and improved to 9-3 against nationally-ranked competition. UTA dropped to 11-3.
WSU survived an early test to win the doubles point. After the team split the first two matches to completion,
Abby Stevens and
Giulia Guidetti overcame 5-4 and 6-5 deficits on court 3 to win in a tiebreaker (7-2).
The Shockers left little to chance in the singles portion, winning the first set on all six courts.
Rebecca Pedrazzi dropped the first domino with a 6-2, 6-3 win on court no. 2 to make it a 2-0 WSU lead. Stevens won 7-6(3), 6-4 at no. 6 singles, and
Gabriela Porubin clinched the dual with a 7-5, 6-2 decision on court no. 1.
Julia Schiller had match point on court no. 3, but her match was abandoned when Porubin clinched. Guidetti (7-6, 4-3) and
Aleksandra Trifunovic (6-3, 3-4) also held leads on courts 4 and 5 when play was halted.
WSU continues its homestand next weekend and resume MVC competition when Northern Iowa (Saturday, 11 a.m.) and Drake (Sunday, 10 a.m.) come to town. The Shockers are 1-0 in conference play, thanks to a January win over Missouri State.
