Photo GalleryWICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State used a four-run eighth inning to defeat Stephen F. Austin 10-2 in the first game of the two-game series Tuesday night.
Connor Lungwitz got the win in his first start as a Shocker and had an impressive debut, pitching six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and two hits.
WSU's offense was lead by
Greyson Jenista who went 2-for-4 including a three-run home run, and
Tanner Kirk who was 2-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBI.
The Shockers took an early 1-0 in the second inning.
Gunnar Troutwine reached first on a single up the middle and advanced to second when
Alec Bohm singled to left. Troutwine moved to third with a single from
Travis Young and scored on a throwing error.
WSU added another two runs in the third, which started with back-to-back singles from Kirk and Jenista. A walk for
Ryan Tinkham and groundout from Troutwine advanced the runners and brought Kirk in to score. SFA's throwing error allowed Jenista to also score, putting the Shockers up 3-0.
Kirk started the fifth inning with a bang, hitting a solo home run to left field and extending the lead 4-0.
With one out in the sixth,
Chase Rader doubled down the left field line and advanced to third on a fielding error.
Alec Bohm's pop fly deep to left field brought in Rader and gave WSU a 5-0 lead.
An error-filled seventh inning helped the Shockers extend their lead 6-0. Tinkham was hit by a pitch and advanced Jenista to second, who reached on a walk. A wild pitch gave both base runners the opportunity to advance. Troutwine reached on a fielding error which also allowed Jenista to score.
WSU increased their lead again in the eighth, which began with three straight walks to
Zach Reding,
Keenan Eaton and
Mikel Mucha. Kirk grounded out to third, but brought in
Bret Fehr who came in as a pinch runner. Jenista cleared the bases with a home run to right field to make the score 10-0.
SFA scored their only runs of the game in the top of the ninth from a two-run home run by Zach Valenzuela.
The Shockers and Lumberjacks wrap up the series on Wed., March 30 at 1 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
