Photo GalleryPROVIDENCE, R.I. – No. 3 Miami held off a furious rally that saw No. 11 Wichita State erase a 21-point deficit to defeat the Shockers, 65-57, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday afternoon at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
Wichita State (26-9) saw its 2016 NCAA Tournament come to an end after two victories, while Miami (27-7) punched its ticket to the Sweet 16 where it will meet the winner of No. 7 Iowa and No. 2 Villanova in Louisville.
Fred VanVleet led the Shockers with 12 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. With his four steals he passed former Shocker Jason Perez as the all-time steals leader in Wichita State history with 225.
Shaquille Morris also scored 12 points on 6-of-12 shooting to go with six boards.
Ron Baker added 11 points.
VanVleet, Baker,
Evan Wessel,
Anton Grady and Tom "Bush" Wamukota saw their Shocker careers come to a close Saturday afternoon. For VanVleet and Baker they will go down as two of the greatest Shockers to ever put on the Black and Yellow. Their names litter the school and Missouri Valley Conference record books and the list goes on with the accolades they've received during their careers.
WSU's shooting woes came back to haunt them, as they shot just 34 percent overall and converted just 6-of-22 attempts from long range. The Hurricanes knocked down 55 percent of their field goals, including 7-of-12 from deep.
Wichita State outrebounded Miami, 33-26, including a 16-2 advantage in offensive rebounds. They were able to turn those rebounds into points by outscoring UM in second chance points, 20-0.
Angel Rodriguez led all scorers with 28 points on 9-of-11 shooting to go with five assists. Sheldon McClellan scored 18 and Davon Reed added 10 to round out the double-figure scorers for the Hurricanes. No other Miami player had more than four points.
Rodriguez scored the first seven points for Miami to help the Hurricanes shoot out to a 7-2 lead and then a 9-4 lead at the first media timeout with 14:52 left in the half. The Shockers started the game just 1-of-9 from the field.
Miami's lead extended to double-digits just over six minutes into the game following a three from Davon Reed. A steal and score from Rodriguez put him into double-figures already by the 12-minute mark of the opening half.
The Hurricanes blitzed WSU to lead by 19 at the midway point of the first half. Seemingly nothing went right for Wichita State in the first 12 minutes of play. The Shockers then fell behind, 27-6, to force a Gregg Marshall timeout after another Miami basket. WSU missed 13 of its first 14 field goal attempts and turned the ball over nine times, after committing just six turnovers in the entire game vs. Arizona on Thursday.
A Baker three-pointer sparked an 11-0 WSU run to breathe some life into the Shockers, cutting the deficit to 27-17. During the run VanVleet and Morris each scored a pair of baskets following Baker's three-ball. Miami scorched the nets to open the game, but went nearly five minutes without a score.
Miami went the final 8:27 without a field goal, but still held a 32-19 lead at halftime. Rodriguez scored 16 first half points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the floor. The Hurricanes shot 60 percent (12-for-20) in the first 20 minutes, while WSU was at 24 percent. The Shockers hit only 1-of-9 attempts from beyond the arc and also had 10 turnovers.
After a McClellan three and a Kamari Murphy dunk put Miami back up 17 just a few minutes into the second half, the Shockers hit consecutive three-pointers in a span of 10 seconds to crawl back within 11, 38-27. Following a Miami turnover and WSU timeout, the Shockers cut the lead to single digits on a low post score from Morris.
VanVleet's driving layup with 12:26 remaining shrunk Miami's lead to just five, 42-37, and forcing a UM timeout. WSU would score six more points (11-0 run) to finally take its first lead of the game, 43-42, at the 10:26 mark in the second half on a Baker three-pointer, after the Shockers trailed by as many as 21 points in the first half.
That would be the only lead of the game for the Shockers, as UM came right back scoring six straight and regaining the lead for good, 48-43. Both teams traded baskets down the stretch with Miami holding a 55-50 lead at the final media timeout (3:36 remaining).
Rodriguez drilled a three-pointer with 1:14 to go to put Miami up seven, 60-53, that almost certainly sealed the win for the Hurricanes. UM added free throws in the final half minute to ice it.
