No. 21 Shockers Down 23rd-ranked Kansas

LAWRENCE, Kan. – No. 21 Wichita State picked up another impressive road win in comeback fashion, defeating No. 23 Kansas, 5-2, Friday afternoon at the Jayhawk Tennis Center.

WSU (11-3) handed KU (6-1) its first loss of the season and defeated its in-state rival for the third consecutive year.

The Shockers got an early lift in the doubles portion. Julia Schiller and Gabriela Porubin made short work of their opponents on court no. 1. Kansas answered with a win at the No. 3 spot, but Aleksandra Trifunovic and Rebecca Pedrazzi swung the doubles point for WSU with a 7-6 decision on court two.

"In doubles we played great at no. 1," WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. "We didn't play well at 2 and 3, but both courts kept competing and Becky and Aleks found a way to get it done."

Kansas bounced back by taking the first two singles matches to completion on courts nos. 2 and 4, and things weren't looking any better on three of the four remaining courts.

"Gaby wasn't feeling 100 percent today, Becky had a 6-0 lead in the tiebreak and didn't win the set, and Giulia was down a set and 3-0," Foster said. "Each had a reason to say 'it's just not my day' but instead they just dug in deeper and clawed their way back into their matches."

Porubin (no. 1), Pedrazzi (no. 3) and Giulia Guidetti (no. 5) all stormed back to force third sets. Stevens closed out her match to even the dual at 2-2, and Porubin and Guidetti completed their comebacks to deliver the third and fourth Shocker points.

Pedrazzi also picked up a win after the clincher to provide the final margin.

Abby continues playing with a great deal of confidence," Foster said. "And on courts 1, 3, and 5, which were all next to each other, we got down a set on each court and just kept fighting."

"Tomorrow we have another challenge against a top-50 New Mexico team so we need to refocus quickly on the task at hand."
