Gunnar Troutwine hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to help Wichita State to an 11-0 win over Northern Colorado in the season opener.
Troutwine led the offense by going 2-for-4 with a home run, a double, a walk, and three RBI. Centerfielder
Mikel Mucha had a strong day at the plate going 2-for-5, with two doubles, and three RBI.
Alec Bohm pinch hit for his first at-bat of his college career and hit a home run.
Sam Tewes was the opening day starter for the Shockers and dominated throwing six shutout innings, giving up only one hit, walking two and striking out six, while earning the win.
Zach Lewis took the ball in the seventh and finished off the game throwing three shutout innings, walking one, giving up one hit and striking out two, earning the save.
Connor Leedholm started for the Bears throwing 3.1 innings, while giving up four runs. The visitors then used a total of six pitchers out of the bullpen.
In the second inning
Ryan Tinkham grounded out with runners on second and third, scoring one and giving the Shockers a 4 – 0 lead.
The fifth inning saw four Shockers come around to score. The scoring began when the runners on second and third did a double steal and the Bears catcher threw the ball into the outfield, leading to

Tanner Kirk to third.
Trey Vickers and
Chase Rader then walked in back-to-back at-bats loading the bases. Senior
Mikel Mucha then stepped to the plate and hit a double to left-center plating all three runners and expanding the lead to 8 – 0.
In the eighth,
Gunnar Troutwine, with one out, hit a double into the left-center gap and then freshman
Alec Bohm hit a two run home run. The Shockers continued to bring their new players into the game as freshman
Greyson Jenista pinch-hit and walked.
Tanner Kirk then roped a double and plated Jenista, expanding the lead to 11-0. A total of four freshmen got their first at-bats in Shocker uniforms in the inning.
With the 11-0 win, the Shockers move to 28 – 11 in season openers, and 36 – 3 in home openers.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Feb. 20 against Northern Colorado at 2 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
