Busy Weekend Awaits; Shocks Jump to No. 32

ITA Division I Rankings

WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State women's tennis team inched two spots higher to No. 32 in the latest Oracle/ITA Division I Rankings.

Sophomore Gabriela Porubin more or less held her ground in the first national singles ranking update since early January. Porubin (13-8 this year and 2-2 against nationally-ranked competition) checked in at No. 72, down one notch from last month.

Porubin represents the Missouri Valley Conference's lone entry on either the singles or doubles list.

As a team, the Shockers opened the year at No. 38 and have gained ground in each of the three updates since. They've been in the top-40 in every ITA poll since Feb. 10, 2015, climbing as high as No. 25 in late March of last season.

WSU (5-2, 1-0 MVC) is set for a busy weekend with four matches in three days, beginning Thursday when it takes on BYU (11:00 a.m. CT) and Missouri (5:00 p.m.) in Columbia, Mo.

Thursday:
BYU is out to a 1-2 start, but all three matches have come against nationally-ranked competition. The Cougars own a win over current-No. 75 Maryland with losses to No. 9 Virginia (7-0) and No. 56 Denver (4-3).

Live scoring will be available for Thursday's evening match with Mizzou at www.shockerstats.com. The 6-0 Tigers have already faced three other MVC teams in the early stages of the spring season, defeating Bradley (6-1), UNI (7-0) and Missouri State (7-0). WSU defeated then-No. 74 Mizzou, 6-1 last year in Wichita and has won five of the last six meetings.

Saturday:
WSU then travels to Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday for duals against host Nebraska (11:00 a.m.) and a neutral site match vs. Colorado State (5:00 p.m.).

The Shockers have won two-straight against the Huskers, who are also out to a 6-0 start.

WSU and CSU are squaring off for only the second time in 15 years. The Shockers swept a similar neutral site match against the Rams (also in Lincoln) back in 2012 and lead the all-time series 5-2.
