WICHITA, Kan. -- Wichita State led the entire game to take a 73-63 win against Incarnate Word on the final day of the 2016 Winter Classic to improve to 5-5 overall and win its second game in two days.
For the second-straight game, the Shockers led wire-to-wire and improved their four-year Winter Classic record to 8-0. WSU's 45.5 percent (30-66) shooting effort from the field topped UIW's 33.3 percent (23-69).
Tournament MVP
Jeliah Preston scored 21 points Friday, and 11 points today, for a two-day average of 16.0 points.
Rangie Bessard, who had 19 points today and 18 on Friday, and
Angiee Tompkins, who had 16 points today, were also named to the all-tournament team for the Shockers.
UIW was led in scoring by All-Tournament selection Cheyenne Berry, who had 17 points.
WSU came out of the halftime locker room and turned its 17-point lead into 25 points by the 3:45 mark of the third quarter but after a seven-point UIW burst, held an 18-point lead, 60-42.
UIW surged in the fourth quarter, out-scoring WSU, 21-13, but it wasn't enough and the Shockers held on for the 10-point win, 73-63.
The Shockers jumped to a 17-7 first-quarter lead behind seven points from Bessard. The Cardinals fought back over the final 2:45 to out-score WSU, 9-6, and close the gap to 23-16.
In the second quarter action, the Shockers out-scored UIW, 22-12 to take a 45-28 lead into the locker room.
For the half, WSU out-shot UIW, 60.6 percent (20-33) to 39.3 percent (11-28). Individually, WSU was led in scoring by Bessard's 15 points. Mike backed her with 10. UIW was led by Berry's 11 points.
In the early game Sunday, Abilene Christian controlled Murray State for 38 and a half minutes to take an 81-57 win. ACU improved to 5-6 overall and MSU fell to 7-5 overall. Both teams finished 1-1 in the Winter Classic.
ACU was led in scoring by Sierra Allen who had 15 points. Suzzy and Lizzy Dimba backed her with 14 each and Alexis Mason had 11. Lizzy Dimba also contributed the double-double with 12 rebounds.
Murray State was led by Jasmine Borders' 13 points.
Abilene Christian out-shot MSU, 50 percent (31-62) to 35.6 percent (21-59). ACU also dominated on the boards, out-rebounding the Racers, 46-27.
