CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Wichita State won the fourth Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title in school history with a 3-1 win over Missouri State. The Shockers won by scores of 31-29, 25-19, 26-28 and 25-23.
Tabitha Brown led the Shockers with 18 kills, while
Jody Larson had 16 kills and 16 digs and
Mikaela Raudsepp had 14 kills.
Emily Hiebert had 55 assists and 16 digs and
Dani Mostrom had a match-high 23 digs. Larson earned Tournament MVP honors, while Brown and Hiebert were named to the all-tournament team.
The first set went back and forth until the Bears took a 7-4 lead with a 4-0 run. The Shockers responded with a 3-0 run to tie the score at seven. A Brianne Dixon service ace put the Bears up 10-8, but two-straight kills from
Jody Larson pulled the Shockers within 11-10. A solo block by
Mikaela Raudsepp gave the Shockers an 18-17 lead, but the Bears used five-straight kills to take a 22-18 lead. Kills from Raudsepp and Brown cut the lead to 22-20 and a block by Dudzinski and Larson pulled WSU within 22-21. Two kills from Brown gave the Shockers a 23-22 lead and another one brought the Shockers to set point at 24-23. The two teams traded points and with the score tied at 29, the Shockers scored the final two points on a
Gabi Mostrom service ace and a Brown kill for the 31-29 win.
The Bears took an early 5-3 lead in the second set, but the Shockers took a 9-7 lead on a kill by Dudzinski. The Bears came back to take a 12-11 lead after back-to-back Shocker hitting errors, but WSU used four-straight kills to take an 18-15 lead. The Bears answered to tie the score at 18, but kills from Brown and Lehman and a block by Hiebert and Lehman put the Shockers up 21-18. Another block gave WSU a 24-19 lead and the Shockers won the set 25-19 on a Bear hitting error.
The Bears took a 12-9 lead in the third set, but the Shockers tied it at 15 on a kill by Raudsepp. A 4-0 run by the Bears put MSU up 19-16 and led to a Shocker timeout. WSU pulled to within 20-19 after a Bear service error, but the Bears answered with two-straight to go up 22-19. A Larson kill and Brown block tied the score at 22 and WSU reached match point at 24-23 on a Bear hitting error. Tied at 26, the Bears scored two-straight to take a 28-26 win.
The two teams traded points throughout the fourth set until the Bears took a 14-12 lead on a kill by Lynsey Wright. The Shockers tied the set at 15 on a kill by Larson and took a 16-15 lead on an ace by Hiebert. A Raudsepp kill increased the lead to 18-15 and a Bear error made it 21-16. A Lily Johnson kill pulled the Bears within 21-19, but a Lehman kill gave the Shockers a 23-20 lead. Another Lehman kill brought the Shockers to match point at 24-21 and a Raudsepp kill gave WSU a 25-23 win.
The Shockers will find out their next opponent during the NCAA Selection Show on Sun., Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. on ESPNU.
