EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Wichita State volleyball team ended its regular season on a high note, taking down Evansville in three sets by scores of 25-16, 25-7 and 25-18.
As a team, the Shockers hit .425 and had 46 kills, while the Purple Aces hit just .094 and had 29 kills. The Shockers also collected six service aces and had just one service error.
Tabitha Brown and
Abbie Lehman led the way offensively with 16 kills and 13 kills respectively. Brown hit .483 in the match, while Lehman hit .550.
Emily Hiebert added a three-set record 38 assists, breaking the previous record of 37, also set by Hiebert against Drake.
Rocio Fortuny, who had ten kills on 38 attempts to hit .132, led the Aces.
Back-to-back kills by Brown and Lehman helped Wichita State take an early 4-1 lead in the first set, before the Purple Aces called their first timeout of the set. A service ace by Evansville and an attacking error for the Shockers tied the game, 8-8. After the Aces took a 9-8 lead, the Shockers went on a 5-0 run to take a 13-9 lead. A service ace for
Dani Mostrom and a kill from Lehman pushed the WSU lead to 21-11. Two kills by Brown, gave the Shockers the win in set one, 25-16.
After taking a 3-2 lead in set two, the Shockers went on an 18-0 run, to take a 21-2 lead before back-to-back kills by the Aces made the score 21-4. After Evansville cut the lead to 22-7, a service ace by Lehman and a kill by
Mikaela Raudsepp gave the Shockers the 25-7 win in the second set.
The Shockers jumped out to another early lead, 5-0, before the Aces cut the lead to 6-3 coming out of a timeout. After both teams traded points, the Aces went on a 3-0 run to cut the Shocker led to 11-9. The Shockers then quickly pushed the lead back to 17-13. After pushing the lead back to 21-15, Evansville called their second timeout of the set. Coming out of the timeout, kills by Brown, Hiebert and Lehman, and an attack error by Evansville gave WSU the 25-18 win in the set, and a 3-0 win in the match.
Wichita State ends the regular season with an overall record of 22-7, and 15-3 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Shockers will be in action again, November 24-26 for the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The bracket will be announced later tonight.
