WICHITA, Kan. – A 21-0 second half run turned a competitive game into a rout. Behind another balanced scoring effort, Wichita State rolled to a 92-55 win over Long Beach State Sunday night at Charles Koch Arena.
Conner Frankamp led a group of five double-figure scorers for WSU (2-0). He knocked down 3-of-5 three-point attempts on his way to a career-high 15 points and also played a career-best 28 minutes.
Landry Shamet scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half, while
Zach Brown and
Daishon Smith each added 11. Smith also grabbed six boards and dished four assists.
Austin Reaves scored all 10 of his points after half.
Darral Willis Jr. provided another solid performance off the bench by scoring nine points and pulling down five rebounds.
Picked to win the Big West, the visiting 49ers (1-1) shot just 25 percent in the second half and 31 percent overall (20-for-64), while committing 21 turnovers in the game.
Through the first two games, Shocker opponents are 5-for-36 from beyond the arc after holding the Beach to only 2-for-20 on the night.
Wichita State converted on only 4-of-23 attempts from long range in the season-opener, but after missing four of their first five to start the night, finished on a 9-for-15 kick to end the evening at 10-of-20 overall.
WSU shot 55 percent (31-for-56) from the field and outrebounded LBSU, 46-35.
Long Beach State's Gabe Levin led the 49ers with 13 points, 10 of which came in the opening half.
Both teams combined to make just 2-of-11 shots from the field in the opening four-plus minutes of action.
Shaquille Morris kick-started things for Shockers with five points and three boards in his first seven minutes on the floor.
After the first 12 minutes of play neither team had gained any separation with the Shockers leading 22-20. Coming out of a media timeout, back-to-back buckets from Shamet and Willis Jr. gave Wichita State its largest lead to that point, 28-21, with just over five minutes until half to force a 49er timeout.
A three from the corner by Shamet extended WSU's lead to double-digits for the first time at the three-minute mark, 35-25. After a LBSU basket, Brown splashed a three of his own to make it 38-27.
Frankamp dropped in a sweet floater on the baseline with the shot and game clock about to expire in the first half to put WSU ahead by 12. The Beach would add two free throws with five seconds left to make it 43-33 at halftime.
Shamet tied for a game-high 10 points in the first half with Long Beach State's Gabe Levin. Frankamp added nine points, while Willis Jr. chipped in six points and three boards in 11 productive minutes.
The Shockers finished the half shooting 47 percent, while holding the Beach to 37 percent. Long Beach failed to make an attempt in seven tries from downtown, as WSU knocked down 3-of-9.
Long Beach scored the first five points coming out of the locker room, but a Frankamp trey and basket inside from Brown put the lead right back to double-digits.
Brown then swiped a steal and threw down an uncontested dunk to force the Beach to take a timeout with WSU leading 50-38.
Out of the timeout, a pair of Smith three-pointers and a breakaway layup pushed Wichita State's run to 15-0 and a 20-point lead in the game to force yet another 49er timeout.
Smith's personal 8-0 run on Long Beach put him into double-figures with 10 points.
Frankamp's third long range bomb upped the WSU run to 18-0 spanning more than six minutes to give the Shockers a 61-38 lead. Wichita State's run finally came to an end at 21-0, but by that time the game was out of hand.
Reaves joined the scoring attack with a layup in transition and then a trey with the shot clock running down to make it 72-40 with just less than eight minutes to go.
McDuffie put the exclamation point on the game with his thunderous two-hand putback slam, making it 86-52.
