WICHITA, Kan. – The Wichita State volleyball team fell 3-1 to Missouri State on Friday night inside Charles Koch Arena. The Shockers lost by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 18-25, and 25-21.
Abbie Lehman recorded 17 kills for Wichita State, while
Jody Larson was also in double-digits with 10 kills.
Emily Hiebert added 43 assists and
Dani Mostrom had 23 digs.
A kill by
Mikaela Raudsepp put the Shockers ahead 5-4 early in the first set, but Missouri State used a 6-2 run to give themselves the lead, 10-7. A Bears ace put them up 14-9 and they led 15-9 at the media timeout. A Lehman kill cut the lead to 17-11, but the Bears kept Wichita State at bay and their 20-12 lead forced the Shockers to take a timeout.
Katy Dudzinski's kill made the score 23-16 Missouri State, forcing the visitors to take a timeout of their own. Out of the timeout, the Bears scored two of the next three points to win the set, 25-17.
A block by Dudzinski and
Jody Larson early in the second set tied the frame at seven, but that's as close as the Shockers would get, as Missouri State took a 15-12 lead into the media timeout. Back-to-back kills by the Shockers cut the lead to 19-16, but Missouri State answered with four straight points to stretch its lead to 23-16. The Bears won the set 25-20.
Larson's kill and an ace by
Tabitha Brown gave the Shockers a 3-2 lead to open the third set. Then, an attacking error on Missouri State and a kill by Dudzinski broke a six-all tie to give Wichita State an 8-6 advantage. Back-to-back kills by Lehman and Hiebert put the lead at 15-11 Wichita State, forcing the Bears to take a timeout. Later, a block by Raudsepp and Dudzinski forced another Missouri State timeout as the Shockers went up 18-14. Lehman connected on the last two points of the set for Wichita State with a kill and block, respectively, to win the third set, 25-18.
The Shockers scored four consecutive points early in the fourth set to take a 4-2 lead. Hiebert's kill broke a 7-all tie, but Missouri State would eventually take a 12-10 lead, forcing Wichita State to take a timeout. Back-to-back kills by Hiebert and Larson gave Wichita State the lead again, 16-15 and Missouri State took a timeout of its own. A kill by
Tabitha Brown put the score at 18-all before Missouri State rattled off three-straight points to take control of the set. The Bears went on to win the set, 25-21.
