Netters Score 5-2 Win at #35 Oklahoma

NORMAN, Okla. -- The Wichita State women's tennis team - 39th in the ITA Division I rankings - picked up an impressive 5-2 win at No. 35 Oklahoma, Sunday afternoon at the Headington Family Tennis Center.

WSU (3-0, 1-0 MVC) defeated Oklahoma for the first time since 2009 and for only the fifth time in 38 meetings overall. The Sooners had taken the last five in the series and 28 of the last 30. It's also the Shockers' highest-ranked dual win since a 4-3 victory over No. 31 Rice near six years ago (March 12, 2010).

"I'm really happy for this group," WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. "They've got experience pushing and beating some of the best teams in the region, and to come through today caps off a good weekend to start the season."

The Shockers took the doubles point with wins from each of its top two duos.

Rebecca Pedrazzi made quick work of Mimi Fotopoulos at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1, to make it a 2-0 WSU lead.

"We came out and played at a high level," WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. "On the road against a high-quality team - to get that (doubles) point - and then have our senior leader Becky quickly extend the lead to 2-0 really put pressure on them."

The teams traded points when Lily Miyazaki scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over WSU's Gabriela Porubin (ITA No. 71), and the Shockers' Aleks Trifunovic ousted Christian Brigante, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 5 position.

Julia Schiller took her opening set from Simran Sethi, 7-6, and built a 5-1 lead in the second set before fending off a ferocious comeback effort. Schiller eventually closed out the match, 7-5, officially clinching the team victory.

"OU fought hard and didn't give in," Foster said. "I thought we did well to respond to their push, and that - combined with the early lead - got us across the line."

OU picked up a second point when Emma Devine bumped Abby Stevens at the No. 4 spot. Tanaporn Thongsing gained the fifth-and-final Shocker tally at No. 6, defeating Malene Stripp, who withdrew due to injury, after the players had split the first two sets.
