COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Wichita State came out strong, winning the first two sets, but dropped the final three to New Mexico State. The Aggies won by scores of 20-25, 23-25, 25-21, 30-28 and 15-13.
Junior outside hitter
Jody Larson led the team with 16 kills while sophomore setter
Emily Hiebert led with 52 assists. Senior
Katie Reilly also added a team leading .308 hitting percentage.
The Shockers jumped out to an early 6-3 lead with a kill by
Emily Hiebert, but the Aggies fought their way back to tie the game 7-7. An
Emily Hiebert kill gave the Shockers another lead at 13-10. On back-to-back kills by New Mexico State, the Aggies cut the lead to one at 20-19. A kill by
Katy Dudzinski and a service ace by
Emily Hiebert gave the Shockers a 25-20 win.
New Mexico State jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the second set. The Shockers and the Aggies went back and forth until a New Mexico State service ace gave the Aggies a 13-10 lead. WSU fought back to take a 20-19 lead on back-to-back kills from
Abbie Lehman, but an Aggie kill brought score back to 24-23. A
Katie Reilly kill gave the Shockers a 25-23 win.

Katy Dudzinski kill gave the Shockers an early 8-5 lead in the third set. The Aggies tied the game 11, but a Larson kill gave the Shockers a 12-11 lead. Back-to-back New Mexico State kills gave the Aggies a 15-13 lead. After a long run by the Aggies, WSU cut the lead to one at 19-18, but a New Mexico State kill gave the Aggies a 25-21 victory.
Entering the fourth set, both teams were trading points until a
Jody Larson kill gave the Shockers their biggest lead of the match at 14-8. The Aggies then roared back to make the score 19-17, but the Shockers made another big run making the score 24-20. New Mexico State battled hard to stay alive and tied the game at 24 on a block. Again, both teams traded points until a New Mexico Service Ace gave the Aggies a 30-28 win.
In the fifth set, the Shockers climbed out to an early 5-2. Again, New Mexico State came fighting back and took an 8-7 lead on a kill. Both teams traded points for the rest of the set until a Wichita State error gave the Aggies a 15-13 win, taking the match 3-2.
The Shockers are next in action on Sat., Sept. 5 at 12 p.m. against Texas A&M.
