Ron Heller (Basketball, 1958-61)

Was associated with the basketball program for more than 20 years as a player, coach and broadcaster. The 6-foot-7 forward was a three-year starter and was named All-Missouri Valley Conference in 1960 and 1961. He was the squad's top scorer as a senior with a 17.4 average, but was noted for his toughness, defensive ability and rebounding prowess. He led the Shockers in rebounding as a junior with a 10.9 average and at one time held the school's rebounding as a junior with a 10.9 average and at one time held the school's rebounding record with 23 against Drake in 1960. Upon his induction, he ranked ninth in career rebound average at 9.8 a game, and was one of only 27 players in Shocker history to score 1,000 points, ranking 25th with 1,022 points. Following his playing career, he served on the coaching staff of Gary Thompson and Harry Miller from 1964 through 1976 and later was a color commentator for four years on radio and television broadcasts of Shocker games. He returned to coaching after working several years in private business, named as director of athletics and head basketball coach at Friends University in 1984. Inducted, 1989.
