Lynbert "Cheese" Johnson (Basketball, 1976-79)

6/23/2001 2:17:00 PM

A three-time all-conference pick and 1979 honorable mention AP All-American, Johnson amassed 1,907 career points (fifth on WSU's all-time list) and 1,027 rebounds (third). Nicknamed "Cheese" (because of the way he smiled while he played), Johnson quickly became a fan favorite in Wichita after helping lead the Shockers to the 1976 Missouri Valley Conference title and a spot in the NCAA tournament. The 6-5 forward was MVC newcomer of the year in '76 and went on to earn all-conference honors in each of the next three seasons (first team in 1977 and 1979 and second team in between). He averaged 17.3 points and 9.3 rebounds for his career, including 22.2 points and 10.6 boards as a senior. Johnson was selected in the third round of the 1979 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors and appeared in nine games during the 1979-80 season. He was inducted into the Shocker Sports Hall of Fame in 1986.
