The heart and soul of the Shockers' 1989 national champion baseball team.
 
  • Earned first-team All-America honors and named Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year that season after hitting .380 with 23 homers and 99 RBI .
  • He also walked 88 times that season to set an NCAA record .
  • His personal determination and grit energized a team racked by injuries and led them to seven post-season victories in the West II Regional and College World Series when the team faced elimination.
  • Named the Most Valuable Player in the West II Regional and was selected to the All-CWS Team .
  • In 1989, he sparked the Shockers to a school-record 24-game winning streak by hitting in 25 consecutive games .
  • He became the first Shocker to become a finalist for the prestigious Golden Spikes and R.E. "Bob" Smith national player of the year awards in 1989.
  • His 45 career home runs ranks seventh all-time for the Shockers .
  • An excellent catcher, he was particularly noted for his leadership skills and handling of pitchers .
  • A first-round draft choice in '89 by the Boston Red Sox. Inducted, 1996.
