BSB: Shocks Sweep New Mexico With 6-5 Win

WICHITA, Kan. – Wichita State scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth to defeat New Mexico 6-5 and sweep the three-game series.

Sam Hilliard went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two triples, while Trey Vickers went 1-for-1 with two RBI.

Reliever Chandler Sanburn earned the win. He pitched 2.2 shutout innings, while John Hayes pitched two shutout innings for his second save.

Starter Sam Hilliard went four innings and gave up two runs on six hits with two walks and one strikeout.

Carl Stajduhar's solo home run to lead off the second gave New Mexico a quick 1-0 lead. Jack Zoellner and Reece Weber followed with singles and Scottie Graham's two-out single drove in Zoellner to put the Lobos up 2-0.

The Shockers answered in the bottom of the second. Sam Hilliard, Gunnar Troutwine and Chase Rader all singled to load the bases and with one out, Trey Vickers singled to left field to drive in Hilliard and Troutwine and tie the score at two.

With one out in the third, Daniel Kihle singled and moved to second on a balk. With two outs, Hilliard tripled to right-center to score Kihle for a 3-2 lead.

UNM scored three in the top of the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Stajduhar led off with a double and with one out, Weber and Dalton Bowers both walked. A bases loaded walk for Andre Vigil brought home Stadjuhar and a two-run single for Graham put the Lobos up 5-3.

The Shocks again answered with a three-run fifth. Kihle singled with one out and Ryan Tinkham walked. Hilliard followed with a line drive to center and the UNM centerfielder dove and the ball went to the wall for a two-run triple. Hilliard also scored on a throwing error on the relay throw to give WSU a 6-5 lead.

The Shockers are next in action on Tue., April 28 when they host Oklahoma at 7 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
