Box Score LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas scored in six of eight innings and defeated Wichita State 11-6 in non-conference action.
Ryan Tinkham went 2-for-3, while Sam Hilliard went 1-for-3 with a home run.
Starter Reagan Biechler went 2.2 innings and gave up three earned runs on six hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
KU jumped on the board in the bottom of the first. Justin Protacio singled to left field to lead off the inning and moved to second on an error. He came around to score on a double by Connor McKay to give the Jayhawks an early 1-0 lead.
The Shockers answered with a run in the top of the second without a base hit. Gunnar Troutwine led off with a walk and stole second with one out. He moved to third on a balk with two outs and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at one.
Trey Vickers reached to lead off the third on a two-base error. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout from Daniel Kihle to give the Shockers a 2-1 lead.
McKay led off the third with an infield single and stole second. With two outs, Blair Beck walked and Dakota Smith followed with a three-run home run to give KU a 4-2 lead.
The Jayhawks increased the lead with a two-run home run from Matt McLaughlin in the bottom of the fourth and added two more in the fifth on a bases loaded walk and a wild pitch to increase the lead to 8-2.
WSU got its first hit of the game in the top of the sixth after Jordan Farris led off with a single to the shortstop. Ryan Tinkham extended his hitting streak to 19 with a single to right field and Sam Hilliard followed with a home run to centerfield to cut the lead to 8-5.
KU added a run in the sixth on three walks and a hit by pitch to go in front 9-5.
The Shockers used a Jayhawk error to score a run in the eighth to make the score 9-6 and KU added two in the eighth for the final 11-6 score.
The Shockers are next in action on Fri., April 24 when they host New Mexico at 6:30 p.m. at Eck Stadium.
