WSU Earns 7th Straight Regular Season Title

DES MOINES, Iowa -- A winner-take-all battle for the Missouri Valley Conference women's tennis title was light on drama, thanks to a powerful performance from No. 32 Wichita State, which swept all 12 singles sets from Drake on its way to a 7-0 win and a seventh-straight regular season championship.

"I'm really proud of this group," WSU head coach, Colin Foster said. "They continue to have a target on their backs in conference play, yet they rise to the occasion, match in and match out."

WSU (21-3, 7-0 MVC) and Drake (20-5, 6-1) entered the finale with identical unbeaten records, but the Shockers wasted little time separating themselves.

WSU dropped its only match of the day in a tiebreaker at No. 3 doubles but won on each of the top two courts to notch the doubles point.

The Shockers won all six singles matches in straight-sets. Just nine of the 12 sets stretched beyond 6-3.

WSU's veteran lineup played like it had been there before, in large part because it has.

"This is the third time in five years that we've been on the road against the second-place team on the final day of the regular season," Foster noted. "To handle that situation again with such composure and determination is impressive. Next weekend, we'll continue to be the hunted, but it's what we're accustomed to. We'll take it one match at a time."

The Shockers won 47 of a possible 49 points in their seven MVC matches, one of the most efficient championship runs in school history, alongside the 2011-12 team (48 of 49) and the 2006-07 team (59 of 61).

WSU has now won 54-straight conference regular season matches, dating back to 2008.

The Shockers also earned the No. 1 seed in the MVC Team Championships, which kicks off next Friday in Evansville. They'll play a 10 a.m. quarterfinal match against No. 8 seed Illinois State at Wesselman Park.
